The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) a.ka. "The Thunder" is ready for another season in the sun. Prior to even getting in the water, swim team representatives were on hand to give the city pool its annual makeover. John Kulczyk, Ann Kulczyk, Melani Vandall and Michelle Huntsman, all parents of Thunder swimmers, spent one weekend prepping the pool to be filled. The work included spraying the pool with a sealant prior to painting and some minor repairs. This year, the swim team also purchased new...

  • Glasgow's City Pool is Drowning

    Parker Kulczyk, Juvenescent Jots|Aug 3, 2016

The city pool in Glasgow was built where it stands, or slouches now, 43 years ago. It was opened in June of 1974. It was expected to last around 10 years. Like many other things in Glasgow, it has long outlasted its expiration date. It is now in dilapidated, unsafe condition, and is something that the city of Glasgow as a whole and its residents should be embarrassed about. Why haven’t we built a new pool? Why are we putting pool-goers at risk of injury? What is the solution? Glasgow’s pool is the home to many different activities, even in its...

  • Thunder Lands in "B" Division for State Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 27, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team finished their eighth weekend of competition July 23 and 24 in Malta, where the divisional swim meet was held. With 370 swimmers from ten veteran teams, the competition was tough. Swimmers must place in the top 12 of their events just to qualify for state competition. That's not an easy task, and not all swimmers make it past divisionals. The Thunder was represented by just more than half of their rostered team, with 32 swimmers competing at the two-day meet. Of tho...

  • Thunder Competes in Glendive

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 13, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder had a small group of swimmers representing the team in Glendive the weekend of July 9 and 10. Temperatures reached 93 degrees on Saturday, which always has the potential to sap energy from the competitors, as well as potentially causing heat stroke or dehydration. Additionally, a storm was predicted for the afternoon on Sunday, so meet organizers made some changes to the event schedule to prepare for possible delays or a meet cancellation. With just 18 swimmers making...

  • Glasgow Hosts Invitational Swim Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 6, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team welcomed 280 swimmers over the Fourth-of-July weekend for their annual invitational meet. Events started the morning of July 2 at 10 a.m. after Glasgow resident Hannah Mickelson sang the national anthem for the crowd. Most of the races held on the first day of a meet are preliminary, so it's not unusual to have several heats for a single event. With 11 teams competing, it made for a busy day, but with parents tackling their duties head on and Auzzy's Cook Shack...

  • Thunder Struggles in Chinook

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 22, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their third swim meet of the season June 18 and 19 in Chinook, and placed seventh overall. This past weekend's meet was the first meet held in Chinook since the loss of swimmer Jesse Dannels, who died in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. Dannels mother, Ruth, was the announcer for the weekend. On Saturday morning, swimmers from each team assembled at the edge of the pool and joined hands while memories were shared. Following a prayer, in a...

This weekend, many of those records were broken, but a few still stand and wait to be...

  • Thunder Competes in Harlem, Earns Fifth

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 8, 2016

With zero pool practice time and few competitors for the weekend, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team still managed a solid performance at the Harlem Invitational swim meet this past weekend, placing fifth overall out of 15 teams. Harlem's two-day meet is typically low-key and is a good way to start the season, allowing new swimmers to experience a meet without an overwhelming number of competitors or commotion. Because they did not have a meet in their federation, a number of teams from the...

Not long into the first day of the meet, it was apparent that it was going to be a memorable weekend. The powerhouse relay team of Katie Kaiser, Khloe Krumwiede, Jordan Kulczyk, and DJ Rasmusan proved they were a force to be reckoned with, winning gold in the 200m freestyle relay. The 1...

The team eventually brought home fourth place and had three high point winners. Dalton Sand, Trevor Johnson, and Katie Kaiser each won all three of their events in their age groups and received individual trophies for their efforts. Senior swimmer Tony Kaiser was the only male swimmer from Glasgow to attend. Also attending from Glasgow were senior swimmer Jordan Kulczyk, intermediate swimmer Katie Kaiser, and junior swimmer Raelee Dowden. Although they had a low number of swimmers, the Thunder achieved some fairly...

Overall, the Thunder had a strong showing as 13 swimmers competed in a total of 43 events, which included three relays. The first meet is typically low-key and this one was no exception. There were several events in different age groups that had only one swimmer competing....
