Thunder Struggles in Chinook

Fourteen Teams Remember Fellow Swimmer

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their third swim meet of the season June 18 and 19 in Chinook, and placed seventh overall.

This past weekend's meet was the first meet held in Chinook since the loss of swimmer Jesse Dannels, who died in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. Dannels mother, Ruth, was the announcer for the weekend.

On Saturday morning, swimmers from each team assembled at the edge of the pool and joined hands while memories were shared. Following a prayer, in a touching tribute to Dannels, the entire group of swimmers leapt into the pool with a splash. As the group climbed out of the pool, while some swimmers shared hugs and tears, others could be seen holding up four fingers, which was Dannels' favorite number and has fast become a symbol of remembrance.

The event and tribute had the potential to be somber, but instead was uplifting and the perfect start to the weekend.

The Thunder was represented by 22 athletes at the two-day meet, and had 16 placers. Klaire Krumwiede and Katie Kaiser led the team in points, with both scoring 38 points individually, as well as swimming on both relays.

Next on the schedule for the Thunder is a two-day meet in Plentywood, followed by the Glasgow Invitational meet over the fourth-of-July weekend.
