  • Autumn Comes to Hinsdale

    Dane Osen, For the Courier|Oct 5, 2016

Taking in the sounds and sights in Hinsdale at the Fall Festival on Oct. 2 was truly a delight. It was my first year attending the annual get-together, which is now in its fifth year. With plenty of cotton candy and ice cream on hand, the children had plenty of energy, whether it was for a round of musical chairs or to try their skill at a catapult-style target game dubbed punkin' chunkin'. There were also several local merchants displaying various goods as well. Sierra Holt and her husband... Full story

  • Arm and Hammered

    Dane Osen, For the Courier|Sep 14, 2016

Alley's Palace hosted an open competition Sept. 10 for local arm benders to try their might against each other. In all, the tournament attracted 16 contestants, consisting of four women and 12 men. This was my first time attending such an event. Expecting something more comparable to the 80s Sylvester Stallone movie "Over The Top," I was pleasantly surprised that it was nothing like that at all. Sure, there were guys arm wrestling, but the super-macho guys with testosterone in hyper-drive were... Full story

Kevin James and Amanda Sergeant are developing a new store, Vintique 406, in the long vacant building that once housed Johnnie Cafe. The two entrepreneurs are starting something new while still giving a nod to the history of Glasgow's Front Street. The couple's plan plays perfectly into their business model of up-cycled, refinished vintage furniture, home decor and antiques. Along with the recent appearance of Shippwrecked (next to Oasis at 527 5th Street S.), we seem to be experiencing a minor... Full story

A total of 165 people took to the streets Aug. 20 to support Veterans and get pelted with bright colored chalk. While the majority of event go-ers wore white T-shirts, some came in flamboyant bright costumes. This event contains a genuine levity that can be hard to describe with just words. So, I aimed to do it justice with my camera. As I looked for opportune spots for photography, I talked to the paint tossers. It became pretty evident early on that they clearly had the best job out of anyone... Full story
