On Feb. 8 during the Valley County Commissioner Meeting, commissioners agreed to contribute a donation of $1,000 to the St. Mary’s Irrigation Project. The funds will be used to produce a film that demonstrates the need to rehabilitate the irrigation system along the Milk River, and maintaining the dam at Shelbourne Lake, near Glacier National Park. The Valley County Commissioners made the decision to raise grazing fees from $13 to $14.01 on Feb. 1. The increased amount now matches the state’s current rate. The county currently has 2,401 animal unit months (AUM) available for the 14,5550 acres of county land that are able to be grazed. The revenue generated from grazing fees will amount to $33,645.02, which will be $1,385.02 over last year. Karla Nix, 57, of St. Marie, was arraigned in Valley County District Court on Jan. 30. Nix is currently incarcerated in the Valley County Detention Center on the charge of exploitation of an older person, a felony. If convicted, the charge carries a penalty of up to ten years and a fine of up to $10,000. The arraignment hearing, presided over by District Court Judge Yvonne Laird, included the reading of the current charges and a review of possible penalties related to those charges. Glasgow Elks Club held a retirement party for "Smiley" Johnson on Jan. 21. Johnson had managed the club for the past 11 years, during which time he turned the local chapter around by organizing fundraisers, setting nationwide enrollment records, made several improvements to the building and made sure the Elks Club was utilized more for local events. Recent gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte has confirmed that he will seek the Republican nomination for the upcoming special election to fill Montana’s sole U.S. House seat. This position is expected to be vacant due to Congressman Ryan Zinke’s nomination as Secretary of Interior. After being let down at last year’s graduation by the gymnasium’s P.A. system, the community came together to raise the needed funds for an upgrade. The fault in the old system was that it was dreadfully underpowered, and the sound emitted from the speakers was so distorted that the voices coming through it sounded like the teacher in Charlie Brown cartoons. On Jan. 11, the Valley County Commissioners heard a proposal to reduce the number of voting precincts across the county. The county currently has eight voting precincts located in Lustre, Frazer, Nashua, Hinsdale, Opheim, Fort Peck and two precincts in Glasgow. The proposal would form three precincts in Valley County and would be set up according to how the Montana House Districts are designated across the county. Two moose were recently spotted at Duane Mattfeldt's place, east of town, located near the Milk River Bridge on MT Hwy. 24. The moose originally appeared north of the railroad tracks near the Valley Veterinary Clinic, and were eventually seen on Mattfeldt's land Jan. 4. The moose, likely a mother and her yearling calf, seem to come and go from the property. Last week, county commissioners spoke with Robert Latimer of Omaha, Neb., about the Keystone Pipeline and the possibility of the project continuing. While they remain optimistically cautious, they discussed how the pipeline is projected to proceed should it be approved for construction. The Montana Department of Justice will be conducting a statewide test of the AMBER Alert System. The test, set to go off at 10 a.m. on Jan. 13, will be an end-to-end live system test and should include cell phone alerting as well. Montana’s AMBER Alert system is activated to alert the public when law enforcement believes a child has been abducted and that the circumstances could be life threatening. On Dec. 27, 911 dispatch received a call about a situation on the south side of Glasgow around 1 a.m., where reports stated there was a confrontation at a residence. At the residence the suspect, Larry Gilbert, confronted a young adult male and threatened him with an assault rifle. For the past 20 years, Valley County Search & Rescue has teamed up with local wrecker services to offer party-goers a ride home after drinking on New Year’s Eve. This year, the crew will begin to offer free rides home around 4:30 p.m. and will be calling it a night around 5:00 a.m. The DUI task force will be assisting with the funding for this event by donating $15 per ride with a cap of $500. Due to several acts of vandalism, littering, and damage to property, the Valley Event Center parking area is closed to the public, with the exception of approved activities. Trespassers will be prosecuted and Valley County Sheriff’s Office will be enforcing this policy. Our own Busted Knuckle Brewery has received a grant for $39,250 for brewing equipment and to assist with the expansion of the brewery in Glasgow. During their regular session held on Dec. 7, Valley County Commissioners met with Mayor Becky Erickson and Director of Public Works Robert Kompel. The county commissioners passed a motion to accept a request from Sheriff Glen Meier to retire from his position on Dec. 31, leaving behind a legacy that Commissioner Dave Reinhardt recalled as being unique. For the last month or so, construction crews have been diligently at work revamping two local Ezzie’s convenience stores. The improvements will give customers better access to goods and services that they have become accustomed to from the area company. The location in Hinsdale will have the addition of two pumps and fuel tanks. The additional tanks will contain dyed and un-dyed diesel, and will be available 24 hours a day via credit card. After having last year’s carnival leaving everyone except toddlers a little frustrated, the Valley County Fair Board has put forth considerable effort and focus into improving the carnival for next year’s fair. They ultimately were able to land a deal to bring in Dreamland Carnival Company, based out of Bridger, Mont. The upcoming carnival will be larger than it has been for at least the last few years. With the historic new addition almost finished, Valley County’s Pioneer Museum has set its sights on improving their security system. The new system will link up with the one recently installed into the new addition of the museum, and replace the two older systems currently in the museum’s main building and the Quast House. The update will allow the museum to be monitored by one company instead of the three different companies, as was the prior situation. The Valley County Commissioners gathered on Nov. 23 to discuss and vote on several matters pertinent to county operations. The commissioners unanimously approved the promotions of both Taylor Trang to a clerk one position and Julie McGuiness to Treasurer’s Deputy. The Apple Trolley, located next to Crazy Woman Quilts in Glasgow's Plaid Square, is now offering soups to add to their menu of sweets and other snacks. Owner Joy Guttenberg is preparing the soups from scratch, and will be switching up the shop's menu from week to week. The idea came to Guttenberg while she was craving soup at work. The Glasgow Police Department urges owners of campers and boats to remove them from city streets. With winter weather on the horizon, the GPD would like to remind Glasgow citizens that it is against city code for campers and boats to be parked on city streets from Dec. 1 until Mar. 31. The Montana Department of Transportation expects the paving project along Hwy. 117 between Nashua and Glasgow to be completed within the next two weeks, including the sloping and planting of grass along the finished roadway . The remainder of work and chip sealing will be completed next year. Sections of the much-used roadway had been reported by residents as worsening every winter.
