  • There is a lot to be thankful for in the U.S. and in your families

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to the Courier|Dec 1, 2021

Shining Star One shining star in the spectrum of medical professionals was my nurse Tranle Granlie. Last year at this time, it was touch and go for me reaching another Holiday season but I was sent to Billings Clinic. I was operated on and even though they did not have a room for me after a seven hour surgery, they placed me in the hallway at ICU. The nursing staff and surgeons kept close tabs on me and the flashing lights that were on the medical devices that I was hooked up to. Out of all o...

  • Holiday Recipes

Mary Honrud, Special to The Courier|Dec 1, 2021

In the past, The Courier has compiled an insert in late November to early December of holiday recipes from its readers. If they'd sent out such a request this year, I missed seeing it. [The paper did not]. And not having yet seen any sign of such an insert and gardening being at a standstill, I'm offering up some of my favorite Christmas/holiday recipes. Caramel Popcorn • 3 qts popped corn • 1 1/2 C unsalted peanuts • 1 C brown sugar • 1/2 C butter • 1/4 C light corn syrup • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2...

  • Fight For Your Right.

Richard Noble, Special to The Courier|Dec 1, 2021

That sickening sound of your phone hitting the concrete. Most of us have been there, experienced the horrible moment when you reach down to turn over your device to see if you've been lucky enough to avoid a cracked screen this time. You should have bought a case. You should have bought a screen protector. How much will the repair cost this time? Well things are about to get a whole lot easier for those of us cursed with fists of ham. Right to Repair is forthcoming legislation for electronics...

  • Wind!

    Mary Honrud|Nov 24, 2021

I'm pretty sure everyone has talked about, commented on, or complained about the recent two-day windstorm we had. Wasn't that a doozy? It showed how vulnerable we are to Mother Nature. And yet we need to be grateful our winds weren't accompanied by rain and/or sleet or snow. The northwestern coastal areas have it so much worse than us. Flooding and mudslides are harder to recover from. And aren't we grateful we have houses to shelter in? Shingles and roofs can be repaired, unlike the bird nests...

  • Technology. It's Not Just For Christmas.

    Richard Noble|Nov 24, 2021

Somehow, it’s that time of year again. The holiday shopping season is upon us and with that comes the challenge of finding meaningful gifts for the ones we care about. With the landscape so vast for bluetooth trinkets and WiFi kitchen appliances, what’s the secret to not having your purchases regifted by June? It’s estimated that this season we’ll drop around $142.5 billion on technology purchases. A record 191.3 million adults plan on purchasing technology or a technology accessory this year to bestow upon those they care about. This is part...

  • Adventures in St. Marie

Frank A. and Lin Vargo, Special to The Courier|Nov 17, 2021

Finally, great news for Saint Marie residents! “A lot has been happening for the Co-Op!” Pat Trotter, resident and President of the Saint Marie Co-op wrote me the other day to let us know that the convenience store should be open by Dec. 1, at the latest. The Co-Op, and coffee shop will be at 363 Country Club. The coffee shop, they are hoping will be open by Jan. 1. Pat also explained that the Thrift Store is being relocated to 363 Country Club due to remodeling that has to be done since at the current location at 715 6th street, has no hea... Full story

  • Green Spaces

Mary Honrud, Special to The Courier|Nov 17, 2021

As I'm writing this it is snowing up north. In fact, it is snowing enough to turn my yard white. The temperature when I arose at 6:30 was a balmy 36, but the deck was wet and slick with frost. By 9 a.m. it was down to 30, but 'warmed' back up to 31 in a half hour. I'm so glad I'd cleared the front deck of furniture and other obstacles that would make snow removal more difficult. The batteries for the snow blower are well charged, ready for use. The leaf-mowing I did last week will be the last... Full story

  • Tech Space

RICHARD NOBLE, founder of Want For Tech, an IT company based in Glasgow.|Nov 17, 2021

Everyone’s favorite platform to share thoughts, opinions and photos of your kids holding pumpkins has been around for a minute, it’s fair to say. Facebook originally launched in 2004 and opened up to anyone over the age of 13 with an email address in 2006. They recently made news, however, for what’s perhaps our generation’s most controversial rebranding efforts. Facebook is dead, long live Facebook! Or as they’d now like to be addressed: Meta. It’s important to note that corporate rearranging like this isn’t completely unheard of when we ta...

  • Military Vehicles, Fall Backward, and Winter is Coming

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to The Courier|Nov 10, 2021

In the What the heck department?!! On Nov. 5, at about 11 a.m., going through Glasgow was a special train load heading for Washington State. What was in the flat train cars? Military vehicles, thirty railroad cars carrying three of these special military vehicles each. Last year, there were video's of the same kind of military vehicles being transported east, which doesn't help the laymen's sense of imagination. Some might be thinking conspiracy theory.... Fall Backward Well, it is that time of...

  • Recipes...

Mary Honrud, Special to The Courier|Nov 10, 2021

This week I'm offering up a WLC-compliant dessert recipe that even Dennis ate with relish. Of course, he also slathered his portions with canned whipped cream, known to us as "Whoosh" for the sound it makes when being dispensed from the can. I'd bought a bunch of pears and apples through the fruit truck that periodically comes through Opheim and is organized by Janet Bailey. (I thank her for continuing to contact me about it's schedule since I'm rarely around to avail myself of what's offered wh...

  • Brand Loyalty and Technology

    Richard Noble, Tech Space|Nov 10, 2021

Are you Apple or Android? It's a simple question that's now deeply engrained within the acceptable realms of what we ask new acquaintances. This loyalty extends well beyond simply the manufacturer of your cellphone however, there's a lot which goes into customer retention and it pays dividends for those who master it. How much are we missing out on though by standing indivisibly with our faves? Does it really matter any more which camp we choose? Brand loyalty isn't a new concept by any means. F...

  • Come Drunk and Get Eat

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|Nov 3, 2021

During Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Monday, the kitchen at Tequila Breeze was full of life. It was the opening day for the New Mexican and Wood-Fire Grill restaurant, located inside the Glasgow Elks building, and things couldn't have been hotter. The new eatery was so popular, it ran out of food after serving customers at 53 tables. "We ran out of everything," Tequila Breeze Owner-Chef Steven Beardshear told The Courier Monday night. Executive Chef Kevin "K-Dizzle" Bennett said he was...

  • Adventures in St. Marie, Classic

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to The Courier|Nov 3, 2021

Greetings from the "Original" Adventures in St. Marie. We were rather flummoxed when we listened to our phone answering device and found out that we were writing articles for the "Buzz!" After carefully checking the assertion we found out "close, but no cigar." Our header was copied for the most part. So to make it perfectly clear we are not affiliated in any way, with "The Buzz," or the author of the article. We are sorry that you got confused. "Nuff said" on that! On the Mend We can now...

  • Relaxing...

Mary Honrud, Special to The Courier|Nov 3, 2021

I'm on hiatus from gardening. During the past week absolutely no outside work was done (at least by me). There's still a lot I need to do, however. Sometimes the list gets so long that's it's daunting. This afternoon (written last Friday, the deadline for my column) the plan is to remove and store the window screens and wash the outside windows while it's fairly nice. I'll maybe remember to let you know if my plan was successful. It's so easy to get distracted and sidetracked, especially when...

  • Demystifying Quantum Computing

Richard Noble, Special to The Courier|Nov 3, 2021

Future technologies are cool, but they're daunting. Physics is cool, but it's vast. So what happens when we combine the two into a revolutionary new way for computers to process vast amounts of data at speeds far beyond the possibility of our current architecture? Enter: Quantum Computing. Don't worry, this is a much easier to grasp concept than the name suggests. First let's skim over how a regular computer works to crunch numbers and solve problems. The computer on your desk works exclusively...

  • Yo Quiero Señor Pup-Pup

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to The Courier|Oct 27, 2021

Yup-yup! Mr. Pup-Pup is back…. Home! After escaping his collar, he took off and wandered the streets of Glasgow for three days, worrying his family as one can imagine! He stopped and looked around put his nose in the air and took a good sniff and then realized he was in “the middle of nowhere!” And, decided he better find his way home. Mr. Pup-Pup or using his alias of “Dog” is Glasgow Courier editor Chris McDaniel and son Austin’s wayward pup. Glad to hear he is back home and doing great although Chris stated that he did look hungry and...

  • Potted Plants/Pork Chops/Pecan Sandies

Mary Honrud, Special to the Courier|Oct 27, 2021

The season for gardening has come to an end, unless you count taking care of potted plants indoors. I'm going to count it just to keep my column from turning into strictly recipes! Most of my inside gardening consists of watering the way-too-many plants I brought inside for the winter. Of course, there's also the disposing of leaves (and the occasional flowers) that dried up and turned brown from the shock of moving into the more constant warmth of the house. There's also the bi-weekly turning o...

  • Laptop, Desktop, Whichtop?

Richard Noble, Special to The Courier|Oct 27, 2021

The day has arrived to treat yourself to a new computer. Your old one’s dutifully limped along for half a decade, obediently assisting you with your tax return and playfully withholding the mute button during Zoom calls. That testy spacebar and scheduling-worthy boot up time have become too much though, and you’ve decided to splurge. Faced now with a staggering array of choices, how do you pick a PC partner for your next period of technological matrimony? As it happens, this choice is now even less stressful than it’s ever been. Before we co...

  • No Conspiracy Here!

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to the Courier|Oct 20, 2021

Well, apparently, the dust has settled at our small town North of Glasgow! Or has it? Right after the not so secret military maneuvers at the old AFB, residents thought that the haven of abandoned buildings and former homes of military personnel back in the day, were over. When what to our wondering eyes should appear between Ash and Locust streets, but Law Enforcement Vehicles from Phillips and Valley counties with a plus one from the Glasgow Police Department. Several officers were in specialty gear near one of the buildings with an odd look...

  • This and That

Mary Honrud, Special to the Courier|Oct 20, 2021

Another week has flown away. We’ve had our first couple dustings of that dreaded “s” word. All the tomatoes were picked before those flurries happened. The back bedroom exudes the scent of green and ripening tomatoes when the door is opened. Several batches of them have been roasted, usually along with onions, garlic, and fresh herbs (the final pickings of basil, parsley, and marjoram needed to be used). Mostly I’ve puréed them into sauce, although I did can one batch as whole tomatoes. The pantry is filling with those lovely jars of red deli...

  • Reality, But Better

Richard Noble, Special to the Courier|Oct 20, 2021

It’s always exciting to me when the benefits of a certain technology are easy to see. Why one laptop might be better than another laptop for example, can be difficult to grasp when all you want to do with it is write emails and order dog food. Features don’t sell technology, benefits do. That immediate wow factor and instant understanding of how something might fit into your life and begin improving it as soon as it’s out of the box. If a technology exists which I’ve never heard anyone lack enthusiasm for, that technology is augmented reality....

  • Oh Dog, Where Art Thou?

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|Oct 13, 2021

UPDATE 4 p.m. Oct. 15. Dog Came Home! Out the front door, Mr. Pup-Pup did dash, Little legs whirring, he was gone in a flash. The hours went by, yet he did not return, He's no cold weather dog, when will he learn? Now a day later, that sure went fast, Perhaps from a stranger, a net was cast. Has he survived out there so cold? Or is he safe in a lap? I haven't been told. Better with a stranger than frozen on the streets, Because then, someday, again we could meet. If you come home, there will be... Full story

  • 'It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's...'

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to the Courier|Oct 13, 2021

"If I knew you were comin' I'd 've baked a cake Hired a band, goodness sake If I knew you were comin' I'd 've baked a cake How-ja do? How-ja do? How-ja do?" 1950's song! Off da hook Well, our phone answering machine jumped to life with semi-frightened residents asking us what was going on. Well, we kinda knew but were not privy to releasing all the information to the public. We really wanted to, but upon returning the phone calls all we could do was reassure our callers that as far as we knew it...

  • Corn, Carrots & Cake

Mary Honrud, Special to The Courier|Oct 13, 2021

I’ve been slowly working at finishing out the garden. This process always takes much longer than setting up the garden. Just planting seeds (as if it were that easy) goes fairly quickly: throw the seeds in the ground, add water, and wait. (Let’s ignore weeding.) Digging root crops, cleaning off the dirt residue, and storing them isn’t so quick. Then there are the above-ground crops that require more prepping for long-term storage. Whether you can, freeze, or dehydrate (or use a combination), it’s time-consuming work. The last of my corn on...
