    At press time, the Courier has learned that Republican congressional candidate Greg Gianforte is scheduled to visit Glasgow on Monday, May 8, at Farm Equipment Sales on Hwy 2. According to FES’s Sarah Partridge, the event will be a barbecue and should run from 5-7 p.m. Montana House Speaker Austin Knudsen and Senator Mike Lang will be on hand to support the candidate and Representative Casey Knudsen (HD33) will assist in providing a wrap-up of the 65th legislative session.   • Job Service to Close June 30

    Representatives for the Montana Department of Labor & Industry confirmed Monday that the Job Service Glasgow office will be closing its doors due to lack of funding. The decision will take effect on June 30. Communications Director Jake Troyer told the Courier that the main cause of the cuts is a combination of significant reductions in federal workforce development funding since 2002 and restricted authorization from the Montana legislature to use existing agency funding to address budget shortfalls over the next biennium.   • House Approves Licenses for Traditional Tribal Bison Hunts

    The Montana House on April 3, gave final approval to a bill to provide two licenses to each of seven Montana tribal groups for the traditional hunting of wild bison. House Bill 108, sponsored by Rep.     Scobey High Principal Bryan Pechtl led a group of five students into Glasgow's south side during the high school portion of the Academic Olympics at Glasgow High School on March 29.   • St. Raphael's Mardi Gras Sees Crowds

    Mardi Gras celebrations at St. Raphael's on Feb. 26 were a decided success, according to Director of Faith Formation Jewel Etherington. "We are estimating about 500-600 people attended," she said, adding that the estimate is conservative.     Valley View Home Board President Brian Fuhrman announced Feb. 7 that its relationship with Health Management Services and HMS Vice President Karl Rude is officially over.     President Donald Trump signed an executive action to move forward with the Keystone XL pipeline on Jan 24. He also indicated movement on the Dakota Access oil pipeline, though timelines and other details remain unclear at press time.   • Stabbing Suspect Charged in Glasgow

    Undersheriff Luke Strommen of the Valley County Sheriff's Office is leading an investigation, along with members of the Montana Highway Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation, into an alleged felony assault. The incident occurred near Glasgow on New Year's Eve.   • New Year's Rides Program a Success

    The Cottonwood’s Rob Brunelle informs us that members of Valley County Search & Rescue along with local wrecker services provided 245 rides on New Year’s Eve to area revelers. That number is up from 160 rides last year. According to Brunelle, four cars were also driven to their homes by the volunteers.   • Fire in Hinsdale, Sweet Memories Closed for Season

    Outgoing County Commissioner Dave Reinhardt kept a stiff upper lip over lunch at the Cottonwood on Dec. 19, despite losing a shop to fire the previous Thursday (Dec. 15). According to Reinhardt, the fire made short work of his shop building, which once served as a home, but conditions and some extra hydration from the Hinsdale and Long Run fire departments kept it from spreading to nearby structures.     Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier formally announced his retirement to the Valley County Commissioners on Dec. 5. He will vacate the position at the end of 2016. Meier is in the middle of a fourth consecutive term as Valley County's Sheriff. He was first elected to the position in 2002 and won re-election most recently in 2014. His term is set to end in 2018.   • Paving Project Nears Completion

    The road construction project on Hwy. 117 is nearing completion. And boy is it pretty in this autumn sunshine. At press time, paving operations between Nashua and Fort Peck remain underway, but much of the road surface is currently paved over. Additional layers of pavement and other traffic features are in-process. A final completion date for the project remains illusive, with state offices closed for Election Day.     Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor will be speaking in Glasgow at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Glasgow High School. Eva has appeared to discuss history and her own story all over the world, including Germany, Israel and Poland. In 1944, Eva and her family were forced into a cattle car packed with other Jewish prisoners and transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp.     We were saddened to learn that Sam’s Supper Club, the storied eatery on Hwy 2 near Reynold’s, has closed its doors. Just before press time, members of Sam’s staff confirmed that they had been informed about the loss of their jobs over the weekend.
