That's The Season, That's An Era, For Hinsdale

Memorable Year Before Sports Merger Ends For Raiders

The Hinsdale Raiders shut down the Savage Warriors in the first game of the 2015 Eastern C Divisional Tournament last Thursday in Wolf Point. The Raiders jumped out to a 7 to 2 lead after one period but allowed the Warriors to play catchup and tie the score at the end of the first half of play.

Each team scored eight pernts in the third act, knotting the score at 25 all going into the final period.

After a lackluster 28 minutes of play, the Raiders finally caught fire and outscored and out defended the Warriors in the final four minutes, gaining a 13 to 4 advantage and the win 39 to 28. By all accounts it was not a pretty game for either team. Savage hit 0/5 from the line and 1/11 three pointers. Hinsdale hit a respectable 10/18 ft's and committed just 10 turn-overs.

Hinsdale's Wyatt Pattison led all scorers with 13. He added 7 rebounds. Kyle Albus hit 2/4 three pointers scoring 9 points. Dallas Capdeville hit for 7 points, Cache Younkin 4, Brett Johnson 2 and Lukas Johnson 5.

The other 3C teams got sent to the recycle bin as Fairview defeated Scobey 67 to 34, MonDak whupped Saco Whitewater 57 to 28 and Culbertson Cowboy'd by Frazer 74 to 65.

Hinsdale drew Fairview in their second game of the tourney and it was a classic battle between two titans for sure and a real crowd-pleaser. Hinsdale jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Monte Cayco hit a three for the Warriors. Then Dallas Capdeville nailed a long range missile for three for the Raiders and Pat Hardy followed for the Warriors. The battle was joined!

Hinsdale's Lukas Johnson made a sweet fake and pass to Kyle Albus, who hit a deuce, and then Lukas got a Paint Bucket (PB) pass from Wyatt Pattison. Pat Hardy hit another three for Fairview at the buzzer making the score Hinsdale 16 and Fairview 14. The crowd was a-buzz.

Ben Hardy drew the hoop and harm, made the shot and gave the Warriors their first lead of the contest at the 7:44 mark.

Brett Johnson drove baseline, faked a layup and dished off to Capdeville, who laid it up and in for the deuce. Fairview gifted the ball back to Hinsdale on their next possession, but Hinsdale gifted it right back. Fairview's Jared Gustafson thought he'd drive past Capdeville for the easy 8-foot floater but Dallas had another idea and stuffed the ball up into the cheap seats – a BWA (Block With Attitude). Cache Younkin, recently inserted into the game for Lukas, hit a three, making the score Hinsdale 26 and FV 19. Then P. Hardy nailed his third three pointer, Capdeville hit two freebies and Cayco closed out things for the Warriors with a threebie. Half-time score: Hinsdale 28 and Fairview 25.

The score after three periods stood Hinsdale 36 and Fairview 34. Eight minutes to go.

It was knotted at 34 when Pattison drove baseline and put up a nice scoop to the rim. After the timeout Gustafson tied the game with a long range two pointer and following two turnovers by Hinsdale, Cayco hit a freebie for the FV lead. Lukas tied the game at 37 with a free throw then FV's Reynolds hit a three that gave the Warriors the lead. Lukas hit a nice OR&PB getting Hinsdale back to within two beans.

Brett drove baseline again and laid it up and in, but with Fairview shooting double bonus freebies with two minutes to go it was tough sledding for the Raiders to catch up. Fairview hit 8 of 14 free throws in the last two minutes of the game.

Brett Johnson nailed an NBN three at the buzzer but it was too little too late for the Raiders. Fairview sent Hinsdale to the recycle bin 56 to 51 to face the Frazer Bearcubs for a shot at getting into the consolation game and a possible challenge game. Stay tuned for the results of that game.

Fairview hit 8/18 threes while Hinsdale tallied 4/16. Fairview hit 14/22 ft's while Hinsdale hit 9/21. Pat Hardy was game high scorer with 18 for the Warriors. Monte Cayco hit 17.

For the Hinsdale Raiders, Capdeville hit 15 pernts, 1 assist and 1 rebound. L. Johnson scored 11 points and 9 rebounds. Pattison had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Brett Johnson scored 8 points, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 rebounds. Albus scored 2 points and 6 rebounds while Cache Younkin hit for 7 points and 2 rebounds.

The Raiders had played the Bearcubs three times during the season and had emerged with three wins. Could they garner the fourth win?

Frazer arrived at this game because they beat Saco/Whitewater. Hinsdale got here because they lost to Fairview and, therefore, psychological advantage to the Bearcubs. The game was close in just about all categories, but it wasn't pretty at the line. Frazer hit just five of their 13 attempts while Hinsdale dropped in just 3 of 10 tries. Hinsdale got 4 points off Frazer turnovers while Frazer capitalized on Hinsdale turnovers by scoring 12 points. Seems when Frazer gave the Raiders a gift, Hinsdale couldn't unwrap it. The Bearcubs had no trouble ripping off the wrapping.

My time is running out, so I'll recap. For Frazer Nathanial Clark nailed 4 of 7 threebies for a total of 12 points. Daniel Horsman also scored 12.

For the Hinsdale Raiders, it was Dallas Capdeville and Wyatt Pattison sharing scoring honors with 13 apiece each. Lukas scored 8, Kyle had 6 and Brett had two. Final score: Frazer 45 and Hinsdale 42.

The boys from Hinsdale had a stellar year indeed with a record of 18 and 4 and their four losses were by a total of ten points! Each loss could have gone either way: a couple more free throws, one less turnover, a couple of misses by their opponents.

At any rate I salute the Hinsdale Raider boys for their great season and share their disappointment at not making it to State. We'll be reminding ourselves of this great team for years to come.

A Specail Day

In Hinsdale

The term "Barn-Burner" is a little weak to describe the Raiders' (11-0) basketball game with the Frazer Bearcubs (10-1) on Feb. 14 in the Hinsdale gym played to a full house of admiring, boisterous spectators.

It was senior night for the five Hinsdale Raiders starters. It was their last home game in front of their last home game crowd. A bittersweet evening for everyone of course, made more so this year as Hinsdale honored two would-be seniors, posthumously. Two young lads taken away in separate tragic automobile accidents while in the prime of their lives.

We said a collective "well done and so long boys" to Garrett Younkin and Justin Leatherberry.

In tribute to these two young men, Justin's parents Dale and Joyce Leatherberry were selected as this year's homecoming king and queen, and Garrett's mother Roubie Younkin was honored as co-queen of the 2015 Hinsdale homecoming.

Dallas Capdeville out jumped the Frazer jumper and Lukas Johnson scored Hinsdale's first pernt on a free throw after he got 'hampered a bit' on his shot in the paint.

Frazer tried a full court press at first but saw that Hinsdale could handle it and they went back to man defense. Wyatt Pattison tossed a quick pass to Lukas in the paint for two, then Kyle Albus drove in for the deuce. Jarom Talks Different hit a three for Frazer which gave the Bearcubs a 4 point lead with a minute left in the first act.

Then Capdeville assisted Lukas who put up one of his picture perfect baby hooks and Pattison capped off the quarter with a PB. (Paint Bucket.) 14 to 14 after eight minutes.

Lukas hit a couple freebies, Albus nailed the front and back end of a one and one, Dallas grabbed an OR put it up, missed, grabbed it again, put it up ... missed but stayed with it grabbing the sphere out of the hands of a Frazer player and laying it off the glass for the point pulling Hinsdale to within a pernt of Frazer. Cache Younkin put Hinsdale in the ahead with a sweet OR&PB up through the trees much to the delight of his mother and the entire Hinsdale contingency.

Saunder St. Marks hit a three for Frazer as did Nathaniel Clark and the Bearcubs surged ahead again but Capdeville hit a couple freebies and later, near the buzzer he hauled in a rebound, quickened it out to Brett Johnson who took it to the hoop at the other end of the court but saw he was covered and Logan McColly wasn't so he bounce the ball to Logan who eazy-peazy-up-and-inned it for the two points and the lead as the buzzer beeped ending the first half of play Hinsdale 28, Frazer 26.

With the score 47 to 53 favoring Frazer, Albus drew back, took aim and hit an NBN three. Capdeville hit a couple freebies as did Brett Johnson then Albus hit the front end of the one and one but missed the second. Pattison was right there in his role as damage control. He grabbed the OR and took it right back up and in through a slew of Frazer players for the points off the glass. This play energized not only the crowd but the Hinsdale players as well as Hinsdale took their first lead since the second minute of the second half and it was a lead they would not relinquish as time ran down.

Frazers' Daniel Horsman made things a bit interesting when he nailed a three from about 25 feet to pull Frazer to within 2 pernts with 4 ticks left but the raiders were not to be denied this, their last win in their last home game in the Hinsdale gym.

Final score Hinsdale Raiders 63 and the Frazer Bearcubs 60. Yikes!!!

For Frazer, Daniel Horsman led scoring 16 points. Saunder St. Marks scored 11 as did J. White.

For the victors and still undefeated in conference play (12-0) and 17-1 overall it was Capdeville who led all scorers with 23 pernts to which he added 14 rebounds. one blocked shot, 5 assists and he hit a whopping 13 of 17 from the line. Great job Dallas.

The 2015 Hinsdale Raiders had the team's best regular season record ever.

That's it for now folks. Thanks for listening.
