Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Schmeckfest 2024

Thank you to all who attended the 59th Schmeckfest at Lustre Christian High School on Friday, March 22.  701 guests were served a German Festival of foods.  A great number!  There were 11 items for the live auction, some businesses donated, some local artists donated their work and both churches donated quilts.  There was also an online auction to view and bid.  It is always so fun to see the unique gifts they donate. Thank you to all who donated items, the auction brought in $38,983! All proceeds from these auction items will go to Lustre Christian High School.  Robert Toavs was the auctioneer for the evening, thanks for a great job.

The German food was prepared by Lustre and surrounding communities.   Favorites are the Verenika [cheese pockets], wurst [sausage patties], henna souppe [chicken noodle], grune bohnen souppe [green bean soup], Portzilke [New Year's cookies], perishke [fruit pockets], paepa naet [peppernuts], zwiebach [double rolls], roll kuchen [crullers], pigs in a blanket [ cabbage rolls], and kirche moos and pluma moos [cherry sauce and dried fruit sauce].  There was a bake sale of German foods during the evening, plus baked items of breads, pies, jams and cookies, a big variety.

The students from LCHS were serving in many ways, carrying dishes, replenishing water on the tables, and some students were even in the parking lot directing traffic.  The LCHS band performed in the program, with locals performing songs and even a fiddle player!  Thank you to all these musical people for sharing their talents.

We hope you enjoyed your evening at the Schmeckfest, and we hope to see you next year for the 60th Schmeckfest!
