North Country Boys Win Two

The North Country Mavericks and Dodson Coyotes boys basketball teams met up in Dodson Dec. 16, and the Mavericks came away with a 58-51 win despite giving up a 13 point lead in the second half.

North Country defeated the Frazer Bearcubs 81-44 on Friday, Dec. 15 in Hinsdale.

Jake Brown had 23 points in the Mavericks' win over the Coyotes. He was also 5-of-7 from the three point line and had seven rebounds and three blocks. Blaine Downing had 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Coy Bowman had eight points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Chase Albus had eight points, six rebounds, and two steals. Laytin Erickson had seven points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Kade Strommen had five rebounds and one point.

The teams both scored 11 points in the first quarter, but North Country pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Dodson 18-8 in the second frame. The score was 29-19 at halftime. 

North Country's lead reached its peak at 43-29 late in the third quarter before Dodson started their 16-2 run, tying the game 45-all. The teams traded buckets late in the fourth period, before a putback bucket by Albus put North Country up 52-49, and an inbound steal and layup by Bowman put the Mavs up 54-49.

In the Mavericks' win over Frazer, the Mavericks outran the Bearcubs 37-10 in the first quarter and maintained their lead throughout. North Country outscored Frazer 12-11 in the second period, 20-18 in the third quarter, and 12-5 in the fourth.

Strommen led the Mav men with 21 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Downing had 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Bowman has 12 points, five steals and three assists. Brown added eight points, four rebounds, and four assists. Andrew Boucher had eight points, 11 rebounds, and two assists. Erickson had seven points, ten rebounds, and five blocks.  Albus had five points. 

The Mavericks were scheduled to go to Turner on Tuesday, December 19, to face the Tornadoes at 7 p.m. Information on that game will be in next week's paper. North Country will host the Circle Wildcats in Hinsdale on Thursday, December 21, at 7:30  p.m.
