For the sixth consecutive year, the Glasgow boys wrestling team has placed in the top two at the Eastern B/C Divisional Wrestling tournament. The Scottie boys racked up 188 team points for second place, finishing behind Huntley Project, 331 points, and ahead of Colstrip, 156; Fort Benton, 104; and Forsyth, 77.5.
The Scottie girls tied for fifth with Fort Benton, both with 49 team points. Baker won the girls title with 145 points, followed by Harlem, 75; Poplar, 61, and Chinook, 60.
Glasgow put three grapplers at the top of the podium in Columbus this past weekend. Khye Gamas defeated Huntley Project's Hayden Ramaeker 3-2 to win the boys 138 lbs. Divisional title. Madison Lamb won a 9-5 decision over Baker's Ryan Gorder for the girls 145 lbs. Divisional championship.
Scottie senior Mason Donaldson, who fell off the coaches power rankings late in the season, showed the oversight was a mistake. Donaldson downed the number-one ranked wrestler in the state in the boys 170 lbs. class. He posted a 5-3 decision over Garrett Sholley of Huntley Project to win the Eastern B/C Divisional Tournament.
The three champions lead 15 Scottie wrestlers headed to the State Tournament this weekend in Billings. The number marks the most State qualifiers for Glasgow since 2008, when the team sent 17 wrestlers to the big dance.
The Scottie boys are sending 11 qualifiers to the All Class tourney while the girls have four grapplers who will compete at the Metra in Billings.
Cody Kuka, Ted See, Cash Richardson, William Kirkland, Jack Cornwell, Michael King, Jaydeen Hanshew and Mo Fast will join Gamas and Donaldson in the boys action. Lamb will have teammates Kaylly Turner, Blake Ozark and Riley Clampitt competing with her on the girls mats.
See took third in the boys 120 lbs., Kirkland third at 145, and Fast third in boys 285 lbs. Clampitt placed third in the girls 152 lbs. class.
Kuka finished in fourth in the boys 103 lbs. while Richardson earned a fourth place at 120 lbs. Hanshew, at 182 lbs., also placed fourth for the boys. Ozark earned a fourth place in the girls 132 lbs. class.
Jack Cornwell took fifth in the boys 145 lbs. class while Michael King took sixth in the boys 160 lbs. class. Avery Pedersen earned her trip to State with a sixth place finish in the girls 126 lbs. competition. Makiya Plummer finished in seventh in the boys 103 lbs. class for his first trip to State.
The Scotties leave Thursday for the hallowed State Tournament in Billings. A fire truck escort will be held Thursday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m., accompanying the Scottie cruiser as they leave the Glasgow Wrestling Center for a good luck parade through town.
The State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11, at the Metra in Billings. Ticket gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Friday's action will begin at 10 a.m. with the traditional Parade of Athletes, followed by the National Anthem. Wrestling begins at 10:20 a.m. for boys and girls and will run through the evening, with the last scheduled round beginning at 6 p.m.
Saturday, the National Anthem will be performed at 9:20 a.m. with wrestling commencing at 9:30 a.m. and running through the afternoon. The Parade of Finalists, National Anthem and Chamipionship Finals are scheduled for 4 p.m. The finals will be on four mats.
