The Evolution Of Businesses

Driving in the business section in our town of Glasgow, I find it sad to see all of the businesses that have closed over the years, and it made me think of all of the businesses Glasgow used to have in days gone by. Of course, during the days of the Glasgow Air Force, there were many businesses that have discontinued, but I am also remembering earlier days.

Do you remember: Valley Implement Co., Hi-Line Implement and Motor, Snyders Agency, Farmers & Stockmens Lumber Co., Royal Motors and Studebaker cars, Vegge Motors, and for the women, what about Adrians. My list could go on and I would be happy to do so if anyone were interested.

I also think of businesses in other towns that I do remember. Of course Opheim was my hometown so many of those come to mind, but also businesses in Hinsdale and Nashua. I do not mean to exclude any of the other small towns in our county but making it to Glasgow was about the extent of my childhood travels.

Of course we had mail order in the old days, but not quite as convenient as online shopping is today. Those were the days of Montgomery Ward, Sears, and Aldens. I think most of our shopping was done locally.

Life changes, sometimes is just takes some of us longer to catch up to the changes. I for one, count my blessings for being able to remember, although I will admit I do not always remember correctly.
