FORE The Kids Cup Tournament

The fifth annual FORE the Kids Cup golf tournament was held June 28 at Sunnyside Country Club under slightly cloudy conditions that threatened rain but never quite followed through. The sun eventually broke through, 'keeping it sunny at Sunnyside' for the golfers out to raise funds for golf scholarships.

Twenty-eight teams hit the links for the largest FORE the Kids tournament to date. "A record turnout and a beautiful day!" raved Sunnyside manager Andy Newton. "Sunday Funday was in full effect!"

The fun may have been mitigated slightly by the challenge presented by the larger cups in the greens. The optical illusion created by the difference threw many a short game off.

Co-directors of the annual fundraising tournament Sandy Maczka and Jenn Jackson told the Courier, "We were able to raise another $2,000 for the scholarship fund, thanks to all the generous donations we received!" The two were proud that 14 youth golfers hit the greens with partners for this year's tournament, an increase from previous years. Jackson and Maczka said, "It brings joy to our hearts to see this many youth golfers participated in this tournament!"

One of those youth golfers, Lak Kloker, won the net score in the Z flight, with his partner Gary Maczka. Dan Bilbruck and Juice Fisher took the money for the Y flight and Shay Piedalue and Nick Hopkins earned bragging rights in the X flight.

Following the tournament, a "Drive, Chip & Putt" contest was held for the youth golfers. The younger set teed off from the #1 tee, then chipped onto and putted on the #9 green. This year saw a tie between Sam Knierim and Eli Feezell, which resulted in a chip off outside the clubhouse on the practice green. After the tiebreaker, Knierim walked away with the student membership prize.

Scholarship winners for 2020 were Donny Brabeck and Saul Hansen.
