19U Ice Dawgs Are State Champs

The 19U Glasgow Ice Dawgs emerged victorious from the MAHA State Tournament in Bozeman, Feb. 28, through March 1, bringing home the top trophy and a championship banner.

Glasgow kicked off the tournament with a 9-5 win Friday night over the Salmon Rapids. The Dawgs spread their scoring out evenly, putting three pucks in the net per period, outshooting the Rapids 33-23 in the game.

Tatum Provencher was first to find the back of the net, assisted by Shanice Lagerquist. Next to light the lamp was Emma Cook. Later in the period, she also shot the puck past the Rapids' goaltender for a power play goal with help from Tori Pehlke. Elizabeth Nyquist turned away six shots in the period for a 3-1 Dawgs' lead.

The Dawgs took control in the second period, throwing 17 pucks on net as Nyquist faced only six shots on her end of the ice. It was again Provencher who started the scoring, putting in a power play goal with Pehlke and S. Lagerquist notching the assists. Kylie Lagerquist assisted Provencher on her hat trick goal, taking the Dawgs to a 5-2 lead. Adding the third goal of the period, and sixth of the game, was K. Lagerquist.

Salmon staged an attempted comeback in the third period, putting up three goals in the final period. However, Glasgow also netted three goals to secure their victory. S. Lagerquist was first up for Glasgow, netting her second goal on an assist from Pehlke. Mayme Collins found the back of the net for the Dawgs' eighth goal. Then it was S. Lagerquist again for her own hat trick, the second of the game for Glasgow, and the win. Nyquist faced 10 shots while her teammates put up 11 on the Salmon netminder in the period.

Glasgow's four penalties came in the second period while Salmon had two in the first, three in the second and one in the third. Nyquist was called for tripping and her penalty was served by Ava Lloyd. Collins served two minutes on a too-many-men call, K. Lagerquist went to the sin bin for tripping and Lloyd later took her own seat for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Saturday morning Glasgow hit the ice against the Havre Ice Hawks and sustained their only loss of the weekend, despite outshooting the Hawks 26-24. Havre scored the only goal of the first period on one of their six shots while Glasgow had 10 attempts.

K. Lagerquist scored midway through the second period on an assist from Provencher to tie the game at one apiece. With 2:47 left before intermission though, the Hawks netted a short-handed goal to regain the lead. The Dawgs put nine pucks on net while the Ice Hawks had 12 attempts against Nyquist.

Havre added an insurance goal with 13:08 left in the game. Provencher and Collins helped K. Lagerquist's goal to bring Glasgow within striking distance, but the goalies for both teams turned away all shots for the remaining 5:37. Havre took the 3-2 win over Glasgow.

Havre served time on nine infractions while Glasgow was only called for four penalties. S. Lagerquist served two minutes in the first period for tripping. K. Lagerquist went to the box in the third for elbowing, while Provencher went in the box for tripping and Cook served time for slashing.

That evening the Dawgs faced off against the Rapids again, this time taking the game 4-2. Glasgow leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Cook, assisted by S. Lagerquist, netted the first goal midway through the period. Pehlkethen scored a power play goal with 5:52 on the clock. With 1:32 left before the buzzer, S. Lagerquist added another power play goal.

Nyquist faced only four shots in the period as her teammates had eight attempts in the first period. Havre scored their first goal in the second period on one of their eight shots while Glasgow managed five attempts in the second but failed to convert on any of them.

The Dawgs were again outshot in the third, seven to four, as each team scored a goal. K. Lagerquist put Glasgow on the scoreboard again with 14:57 left in the game. The three-goal lead would hold until Salmon managed to get a puck past Nyquist with 1:50 left for a final score of 4-2.

Collins served two minutes for a tripping call and Cook served time for hooking in the second period. K. Lagerquist was sent to the penalty box for two minutes on a cross-checking infraction in the third period. Salmon racked up 19 penalty minutes on four infractions, including a 10-minute game misconduct.

Sunday morning the Dawgs laced up their skates and hit the ice against the Ice Hawks for the big game. Netminders Nyquist and Havre's Mackenzie Kuhn were put through their paces in the first period with Nyquist facing 11 shots and Kuhn 13. Glasgow was unable to take advantage of their man advantage when Bradi Holland was sent to the Hawks' penalty box for tripping at 12:53. But K. Lagerquist struck paydirt with 6:22 left in the first when she netted a goal with an assist from Pehlke.

Not until there was only 1:38 left on the clock did a puck make it into a net for Havre, when Ice Hawk Clara Holland, assisted by Jocelyn Staples, scored their first goal against Nyquist. Havre made it 2-1 with 51 seconds on the clock when Paisley Branden, assist Grace Ymzon, put the puck in the Dawgs' net.

Havre's 2-1 lead would hold through the entirety of the second period as the goalies denied all attempts on their nets. Glasgow put up 11 shots on Kuhn and Nyquist shut down five attempts on her net. Glasgow killed off two penalties in the period when Collins was called for slashing and Cook was sent to the sin bin for tripping.

Glasgow entered the final period facing a one-goal deficit, but not defeat. The Dawgs outshot the Ice Hawks 11-9 in their come-from-behind victory. Provencher and Cook were credited with assists on K. Lagerquist's goal at 15:15 to balance the scoreboard. Havre's Rhoda Peterson was sent to the penalty box at 9:32 for checking and served a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct at 7:32 but Glasgow was unable to take advantage of their man advantage.

Tanya Ralph was sent to Havre's penalty box with 5:30 on the clock for checking. This time the Dawgs made good on the chance when Kimber Dulaney put the puck in the net to give Glasgow the lead. Not content with a one-goal advantage, K. Lagerquist added the insurance goal with an assist from Provencher at 1:26. The Dawgs held on to their two-goal lead until the final buzzer, earning them the win and the championship.

K. Lagerquist, Provencher, Pehlke, S. Lagerquist and Nyquist were named to the MAHA State B All State Team, making up five of the 12 players selected. Without a single senior on the roster, the championship team will return all players for next season.
