Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Some Wear Golf Cleats

A group of superheros and their sidekicks swooped into Sunnyside on Sept. 1 to conquer the course in the Superhero golf tournament.

For nine holes of scramble play, the young heroes and their adult sidekicks battled it out on the links. The young warriors were able to tee off from special yellow pins set up for the tournament and had the power to declare one mulligan on each putting green. The sidekicks' powers were limited to one putting mulligan and one tee-off from the heroes' pins.

At the end of play, Beckett Doornek and Rance Rhoads emerged from the pack to claim the top spots in their age groups. "I carried my dad the whole day," said a humble Beckett of his teammate, Nate. Cory Hallock gave credit for his team's win to Rance, "I had some great shots, but Rance's golf shots won it for us."

Charlie Cornwell and Andy Newton, decked out in Glasgow Scottie gear from head to toe, locked up second place in the younger age group. "The best part was golfing with my cousin, Andy," said Cornwell. In true hero fashion, he also praised other golfers. He raved, "My favorite part was when Hank [Hopstad] hit it really close to the hole!"

Second place in the upper age group came down to a chip off after a tied score. Eli Feezell and Stan Ozark took third, losing out second place to Jake Kuka and Karl Krause. "The best part of the tournament was coming in clutch and winning the chip off," said Jake.

Other young heroes included Mia Peterson, sidekick Zak Peterson; Laynee Simpson, sidekick Larry Ross Simpson; Grace Cornwell, sidekick Arleen Archambeault; Klay Cornwell, sidekick Rod Archambeault; Tel Aune, sidekick Terry Newton; and Hank Hopstad, sidekick Taylor Hopstad. Given the success of the tourney, it is likely these young golfers would second B. Doornek, "I had a lot of fun, but wish Andy would do more tournaments for kids."

Newton is no stranger to what an event such as this can mean to young athletes, "Our family, all the Newtons, chose to dress up as Glasgow Scotties because when you're a young kid the Scotties are heroes. There was nothing cooler than getting a high five from one of those athletes."

He is already taking notes and making plans for next summer's tournaments.
