Scottie XC, More than a Team

Dear Editor,

During the past couple years I have had the opportunity to attend many cross country meets. I love attending Scottie sporting events and cheering for ALL Scottie athletes.

Cross country is a sport I never thought of attending nor did I think I would enjoy watching. However, the cross country kids have shown me something I have never witnessed in a sport. They are more than a team; they are a family. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first, second, or last runner across the finish line. It is certain that their teammates will be there to encourage and cheer them on.

Cross country is a sport that accepts everyone and allows kids to make personal gains. The kids on the Scottie Cross Country Team show true Scottie Pride! These kids are humble, kind, hardworking, and all around amazing kids. They spend their weekends on and off the course together. I am in awe each time I attend a meet, as this “cross country way” extends to the other teams and fans. It is not uncommon to see fans wiping away tears as they witness teammates and fans cheering on the last runners to cross the finish line. The camaraderie these kids have shown me has made a lasting impression.

I am thankful that my son introduced me to another Scottie sport to support! Rod Karst has done an amazing job with these kids and I applaud him for instilling so much Scottie Pride in his athletes. Congratulations on a great season Coach Karst and Scottie runners.

Sincerely,

Kim Shipp
