District Honor Band and Choir Festival at GHS

Steve Holte

Over 250 students from Culbertson, Frazer, Glasgow, Grenora, Hinsdale, Lustre, Malta, Medicine Lake, Nashua, Opheim, Plentywood, Poplar, Saco, Scobey, Westby, Whitewater and Wolf Point schools will be participating in the 2017 District Honor Band and Choir Festival. This festival is held yearly at Glasgow High School and brings in a variety of talent.

Two guest conductors will assist the students this year: Steve Holte, of Columbia Falls, will conduct the choir students, while Russ Kellogg, of Great Falls, will conduct the band students.

Students are individually picked from their school band and choir directors based upon their outstanding performances and auditions throughout the school year. This year, there are a total of 149 students participating in the choir festival and 107 students participating in the band festival.

The students will rehearse throughout the day with the guest conductors and each other to create a cohesive performance. "The festival will provide a wide variety of music and provides the students a good opportunity to rehearse harder music than they are used to," said Hinsdale School music/band/choir teacher, Joseph Quinnones.

The choir students will sing a more traditional piece titled "Big Sky," which the students are excited about since it's fitting to the area. The men and women will then split to perform their own pieces: "He Ain't Heavy He's my Brother" will be performed by the men and "Poet Sings" will be performed by the women.

The band students will also play three different pieces: The very intricate "With Each Sunset," the challenging "March," and the energy filled "Revenge of the Swarm."

The concert is open to the public and the students will showcase their hard work on Jan. 30 starting at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

For more information regarding the concert please contact Hinsdale School music/band/choir teacher, Joseph Quinnones at 406-364-2314 ext. 214.
