Scotties Give Divisional Meet the Old One-Two

Mother Nature Delivers a Punch of Her Own

The show must go on. Despite a day-long rain and an hour-and-a-half weather intermission, the Northern B Divisional Track Meet slowly, but surely, moved forward and the participants forged ahead. Early Saturday afternoon, everything came to a screeching halt with a flash of lightning, a crack of thunder and a torrent of rain. Spectators and competitors quickly made their way to safety indoors or took refuge in nearby school cruisers. Facing at least a 30-minute wait before the meet could resume, most people eventually dispersed to their personal vehicles to wait things out. Competition eventually resumed at 3:15 p.m. - nearly two hours after the first lightning strike.

When it was all said and done, the Scottie boys earned the title of divisional champs, finishing ahead of Fairfield and Cutbank.

GHS junior Benji Phillips led the boys with 30 points, placing first in the javelin, second in the long jump, third in the 200m dash, and fourth in the 100m dash. Phillips also ran on the Scotties' second-place 4x100m relay.

The Scottie's freshman boys impacted the results heavily, with Cade Myrick, Ellis McKean and Merlin McKean all placing very well in the distance races. Of the six placers on the podium for the mile run, four were Scotties: Myrick with first, E. McKean with second, M. McKean with third, and senior Walker Allen with fifth.

Glasgow's pole vaulters crowded the podium as well, with Logan Gunderson placing second, Chase Hughes placing third, Kyle Ross placing fourth, and Cody King finishing in a tie for fifth.

The boys' 4x400 relay team also deserves some recognition, with a nod going to Brett Glaser and Garrett Lloyd for averting a potentially disastrous hand-off. Luke Breigenzer was the lead-off runner, while Lloyd ran the second leg of the race. Coming in fast after gaining some ground, Lloyd was tripped-up by one of the other runners. Falling shoulder-first into the asphalt track, he managed to maintain his focus and tossed the baton up to Glaser, who was waiting for the hand-off. Glaser snatched the baton in mid-air and was off and running, although some ground was lost. Anchoring the relay, Ethan Etchart turned on his wheels and with determination, crossed the finish line in third place – just one second behind Shelby.

Team scores: 1 Glasgow 118.50; 2 Fairfield 105.50; 3 Cut Bank 70; 4 Conrad 56; 5 Harlem 45; 6 Shelby 38.50; 7 Malta 33.50; 8 Wolf Point 25; 9 Poplar 24; 10 Choteau 11.

The Scottie girls finished 81 points behind the M-Ettes, and edged out Choteau for the second-place trophy.

Top scorer for the ladies was Alex Simensen with 27.5 points. Simensen placed second in three of her events: the 100m dash, the 200m dash, and the 400m dash. She also placed in the top six in the pole vault and ran a leg of the third-place short relay.

Teagan Fossum qualified for the state meet in four events: 1600m run, 3200m run, 800m run and javelin, earning 16 points for the team.

The Scottie girls earned three podium places in the 400m dash, with Simensen's second-place finish, Emily Kolstad with fourth place, and Baylie Chappell coming in sixth.

Like the boys, the pole vault was a successful event for the girls, with Katie Kaiser completing the event in a tie for third place, Simensen taking fifth, and Kaylee King finishing in a three-way tie for sixth.

The Scottie girls also placed well in the mile run with Brooke Westby coming in second, Fossum third, and Morgan Guttenberg fourth.

All four senior girls (Simensen, Julia Kolstad, Andrea Hansen and Karissa Liebelt) qualified to participate in the state meet.
