Top Ten Highlights Select Athletes

District Track Will Be Here Saturday

Top Ten

The Top Ten track meet was held in Glasgow May 3. Meant to highlight the top ten athletes in each event, the meet produced some inspiring performances.

Although the athletes participating were serious about the competition, the evening was fairly relaxed, the competition was friendly, and sportsmanship was prevalent.

The Scotties were well represented and finished strong.

Both Leinie Hughes and Luke Breigenzer qualified for the state meet. With her qualifying throw of 34-08.50 in the shot put, Hughes placed third and achieved a personal best. Breigenzer is headed for the state meet after a 16.14 run in the 110m hurdles, which earned him top spot on the podium Tuesday.

Also competing in the 110m hurdles was Ethan Etchart, who finished fourth with a time of 17.15.

Senior Alex Simensen earned second place in two of her individual races with a time of 13.19 in the 100m dash and a time of 27.10 in the 200m dash. In addition, Simensen ran a leg on both girls' relays.

In one inspiring performance for the Scotties, Brooke Westby cut more than 20 seconds off her previous PR in the 3200m run and earned a second-place medal with her time of 13:10.32.

Teagan Fossum bested her previous PR in the same race by five seconds and earned a spot on the podium with a fourth-place run of 2:33.26.

With a notable performance of her own, returning to competition after an illness, senior Julia Kolstad ran the 100m hurdles in 17.00 for third place, which was also a new personal best for her.

Jordan Kulczyk placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15-06.50. She also ran a leg of each relay for the girls.

The girls' short relay finished in first place with a time of 52.15, with Baylie Chappell, Kulczyk, Simensen and Emily Kolstad each running a leg for the Scotties. The boys' short relay also placed first with a time of 45.50, with Breigenzer, Etchart, Trent Herbert and Benji Phillips each running a leg.

For the girls' long relay, Simensen, Kolstad and Kulczyk were joined by lead-off runner Brinlie Nielsen to finish second with a time of 4:16.61, which was another PR for the team. Also earning a PR was the boys' long relay with a time of 3:36.86. Breigenzer, Phillips and Etchart were joined by Brett Glaser for a third-place finish.

In addition to his qualifying run in the 110m hurdles, Breigenzer earned his second medal of the evening with a second-place finish in the 300m hurdles.

Phillips struggled a bit in the javelin with what appeared to be some knee discomfort, but still finished the event on top with a throw of 178-08. In addition to the javelin and the two relays, Phillips placed fourth in the 100m dash in a time of 11.53, and second in the long jump with a leap of 20-09.00.

Freshman Cade Myrick set a personal best and claimed fourth place in the 1600m run with a time of 4:46.64.

Finally, senior thrower Trevor Toavs earned a second-place medal with his throw of 132-00 in the discus.

Throughout the meet, athletes from different towns could be seen encouraging and congratulating each other, which is just as inspiring as the great athletic performances. It says a lot about the caliber of athletes we have in Montana.
