Scottie Grapplers All Claim Podium at State

Matt Reyling Finishes on Top, Team 7th Overall

The Glasgow Scottie wrestlers did not disappoint at the state wrestling meet in Billings this past weekend. With just four wrestlers on the mat for Glasgow High School, the team placed 7th out of 45 total schools.

In addition, all four who advanced to state placed in their weight class and each of them earned All-State honors. According to the Glasgow Scotties Facebook page, with the four placings at state, Gabe Hallock, Cody King, and brothers Mick and Matt Reyling make 260 state wrestling placers in Glasgow – an all-time record for B/C schools.

To top off a great personal season for himself, Hallock (103) claimed 5th place in his weight class. He won his first match by pin in the first period, then was defeated in his next match and sent to the wrestle back round. Wrestle back he did, with a win by pin to advance to the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday morning. With a win by pin in that match as well, Hallock moved on to the consolation semifinals where he was defeated, earning him fifth place on the podium.

Senior Mick Reyling (138) grabbed a win in his first match with a 4-3 decision and moved on to the quarterfinal round, where he advanced with another decision (5-3) to the semifinal round. With a 6-4 loss in the semis, he fell back into the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning, and suffered another loss. Saturday afternoon, Reyling claimed his final win for fifth place and a spot on the podium.

King (145), also a senior, easily won his first round match with a 51-second pin to advance. In his next match, King faced Ronan's #1 ranked Jared Neiss. Despite a hard fought contest that went into overtime, King was defeated 9-7 and fell into the wrestle back round later that evening. To finish the first day of competition, he won his last match of the day with a pin and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday. With another win by pin in that quarterfinal match, King was guaranteed a spot on the podium, but would have to wrestle his way up the bracket with two more matches. With a defeat in the consolation semifinals, King moved on to wrestle Saturday afternoon and claimed his spot on the winner's board with fifth place.

Matt Reyling (113) propelled himself to state champion status with a pin in his first round match and three wins by decision, including a win over the #1 ranked grappler from Whitehall. The last time the Scotties had an individual state champion was in 2012 when Luke Zeiger claimed his fourth state title. By the end of the weekend, Reyling had earned gold and all-state honors, claimed a B/C record for the number of state champion wrestlers in a school's history (64), received a giant completed bracket with his name at the top of the board as a memento, and earned a television interview.

The future of Glasgow wrestling looks good, with the program building on the capability of its current and upcoming grapplers.
