Irle Fifth Grade Gives Back to Community

December is a very special time of the year for families to spend together in comfort and happiness. This holiday season, Glasgow's Irle Elementary fifth graders set their lists for Santa aside, and placed their energy toward giving back to the community.

Sixty-three fifth graders at Irle generously donated non-perishable food items like canned vegetables, macaroni, cereals and hygiene products. Multiple students committed time going from door-to-door in their neighborhoods as well from December 1-18. All items were then donated to the Valley County Food Bank on Dec. 21.

The tally shows that 702 pounds of food was collected! This means that we are feeding 12 families for one whole month in Valley County. The school is very proud of the students' selfless effort.

The purpose behind the food drive was to put other people's needs before ours. Typically, classes do gift exchanges for holiday parties, but the fifth grade has shifted the focus toward kids in need. The teachers hope that this community outreach teaches our students the value and richness of volunteering. It's all about giving back and making a difference.

Reese Headrick, from Ms. Himsl's class, said, "It makes me happy helping families in need during the holidays especially." Brielle Partridge, from Ms. Larson's class, commented, "It makes me feel good inside giving instead of receiving." In Mrs. Doornek's class, Ashlee Meland commented, "It feels great volunteering and helping people who are really in need."
