Scottie Softball Exits State Tournament Early

It wasn't the outcome they had hoped for. The team that has built success from powerful bats found itself outhit by their Western Montana opponents. Adding a few costly errors into the mix, the Glasgow softball team exited the state tournament in Belgrade on day two.

The Scotties dropped the first game to Florence-Carlton 11-1. They stayed alive by narrowly beating Eastern 4-seed Shepherd 8-6 in an extra inning, then lost out of the double elimination to the eventual second-place team, Ronan, 10-5.

The Conrad-Choteau Cowgirls are the 2015 Class B/C state champion. They had a landslide victory over Ronan in the championship game, 12-2. The last time an Eastern B/C school won state was in 2011-Stillwater.

This was a disappointing finish for a young Scottie team that knows how to fight. "We could have played better. The girls thought so, too," said Falcon. "They were nervous in the first game playing the three-time defending champion. But then we bounced back and played really well in the second game against Shepherd. I thought that was our best game in the tournament."

The Scotties' bats went unusually cold. Their batting average was 0.115 against Florence-Carlton and 0.25 against Ronan, in contrast with the usual +0.500 average throughout the regular season. In the one win over Shepherd, they averaged slightly higher at 0.324.

"The Florence-Carlton pitcher had a unique delivery and maybe that threw us off. The girls were hitting the ball-we hit ten fly ball easy outs-we just didn't get the line drives we needed," said Falcon.

Although the players managed to keep mistakes under control, a couple of key errors proved to be costly in the elimination by Ronan. "Tyra shut them down for five innings and Abbi Kolstad was making great catches for us. All it took was a couple of errors to stretch what could have been a one-run inning to ten runs," said Falcon, referring to the sixth inning in which Ronan rallied back with ten straight after Glasgow was up 5-0 at the top of the inning.

On the bright side, four Scottie softball players were selected to All-Conference/All-State honors:

First Team B/C All- Conference and All-State: Sophomore Khloe Krumwiede, lead-off batter and a third baseman, and sophomore Tyra Johnson, a pitcher batting clean-up.

Second Team B/C All-Conference: Junior Abbi Kolstad, a second baseman batting third, and senior Sadie Sukut, center fielder batting fifth in the lineup.

According to coach Falcon, Sukut has had a stellar career in her four years on the Scottie softball team. She has set a new school record in stolen bases (89, from Whitney Swanson's 86); holds the second all-time record for home runs (14, after Kaitlyn Anderson's 16), is a 3-time All-State and a 1-time 2nd All-Conference.

GAME NOTES FROM THE STATE TOURNAMENT, MAY 21-23, BELGRADE

GLASGOW 1, FLORENCE-CARLTON 11

Glasgow was held scoreless until the bottom of the 7th inning when Kiauna Barstad hit a single then reached home on a sac fly from Teagan Fossum. There were plenty of scoring opportunities, though, including a bases-loaded prospect at the bottom of the 5th, as Glasgow stranded 7 total. Errors: Glasgow 7, Florence-Carlton 6.

Khloe Krumwiede 0-4, Tiana Johnson 0-3, Abbi Kolstad 0-3, Tyra Johnson 0-3, Sadie Sukut 0-2, Autumn Hopkins 2-3, Kiauna Barstad 1-3, Lexi Nixdorf 0-2, Teagan Fossum 0-2, Ashtyn Myrick 0-1.

Pitcher Tyra Johnson completed 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, walking 7 and striking out 1.

GLASGOW 8, SHEPHERD 6

Like a repeat from the Glasgow Invitational on May 8, Glasgow and its familiar foe Shepherd traded scoring and errors to tie 4-4 at the end of the 6th. Tyra Johnson broke the tie with a 2-run double; however, Shepherd would not go away and evened the game 6-6 at the end of regulation. Again, it was Abbi Kolstad who came through with 2-RBI triple, her sole hit that game, that lifted Glasgow out of pending elimination. Errors: Glasgow 3, Shepherd 4.

Tiana Johnson hit a 2-run home run at the top of the 3rd inning.

Khloe Krumwiede 0-3, Tiana Johnson 4-5, Abbi Kolstad 1-5, Tyra Johnson 3-5, Sadie Sukut 0-2, Autumn Hopkins 0-2, Kiauna Barstad 2-4, Lexi Nixdorf 1-2, Teagan Fossum 0-3, Ziggy Chamberlain 0-2, Rachel Boese 0-1.

Tyra Johnson picked up the win pitching all 8 innings. She gave up 10 hits, walking 6 and striking out 5.

GLASGOW 5, RONAN 10

At the top of the 6th inning, when Glasgow had amassed 5 runs and Ronan zero, the mood was no doubt optimistic in the Scottie dugout. What followed was 10 straight runs by the Ronan Maidens, including Clairmont's 3-run home run, that dealt the Scottie demise in the state tournament. Errors: Glasgow 2, Ronan 4.

Khloe Krumwiede 1-4, Tiana Johnson 3-4, Abbi Kolstad 2-3, Tyra Johnson 0-3, Sadie Sukut 1-2, Autumn Hopkins 0-3, Kiauna Barstad 0-3, Lexi Nixdorf 0-3, Ziggy Chamberlain 0-3.

Tyra Johnson pitched 6 innings, giving up 15 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.
