Dickinson A Tough Tourney, But V-Girls Close With 'W'

Volleyball Scotties Learning On The Go, Beat Sidney 2 Straight

Not many wins, but a lot of memorable moments and virtual wins for your Scottie varsity volleyball girls as they traveled to Dickinson, N.D., for a tremendously challenging two-day tournament.

Friday consisted of pool play against some very talented teams: Heart River, which is undefeated, Fargo Oak Grove and Minot. Scottie Pride shined through much of the day as the girls rallied to keep games close, including an incredible comeback as the Scotties made up a 4-17 deficit, barely falling to Minot HS, 20-25.

"We knew we were the underdogs going in so we took that pressure off ourselves and played like we had nothing to lose,” Scottie coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. “We are also learning nuances about the game itself. One player said to me, 'It's amazing how much easier it is to play defense when you're calm!' All available players contributed significantly to the team's success."

In all during pool play, Glasgow went a combined 0-3 against Minot, Heart River and Oak Grove with a game record of 0-9 in those matches.

No. 3 seed Williston was Saturday's opening opponent for the No. 6 seed Scotties in the Bronze Tournament at Trinity High School, and the Scotties had a hard time getting any offense going. Serve receive suffered and the match was over in two quick games.

Things looked pretty much the same the second match of the day versus a very tall Beach, N.D., team, the No. 2 seed.

"Beach's block did a good job of shutting us down when we finally built up an attack,” Dailey said. “And their serving gave us fits. We definitely were not in a rhythm."

The final match of the day was against No. 5 seed Sidney. The Scotties started strong and hardly looked back, overtaking the Eagles in two straight games, 25-20, 25-19.

"We had to call some audibles, alter some line-ups on the fly, because we almost ran out of substitutions, but I think we avoided panicking and finished out the match strong. It was absolutely wonderful to end on a win!"

Harlem comes to town on Thursday. The C Squad match begins at 3:30 p.m., the JV about 5 and the varsity about 6.

The GHS teams hit the road to play their friends up north in Plentywood on Saturday, Oct. 4.
