What Happened To Our Fair?

Remember county fairs of the past?

I try to remember that “change” is good, but what has happened to our fair? With all of our time saving conveniences of today, why are there so few exhibits?

The majority of women today no longer garden or preserve produce, sew or even mend – therefore no exhibits in those areas.

What about livestock and grains, or the farm equipment and recreational displays? Do businesses no longer feel a need to promote their services, or why the lack of booths under the grandstand? Maybe we as individuals do not care enough to volunteer our time to make these things happen.

Do you remember the men playing horseshoes in an area located between the culinary and arts and crafts building? Was this an organized event or did it just happen?

Anyone remember the pie eating contests? That wasn’t so long ago.

I need a little help on this next one, but remember the set-up where the guys had the opportunity to show how strong they were by swinging a sledge hammer on to some type of mechanism that gauged the force of the blow, which in turn rang a bell so that everyone was made aware of the attempt. A sound of the fair that is no longer.
