Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Glasgow and Frazer Speech and Drama Heading To State

Valley County Speech and Drama students have had a whirlwind since the beginning of 2024, however after competing in Divisionals this past weekend they are looking forward to participating and hopefully bringing home hardware at the State competition this weekend in Choteau.

This past weekend Divisionals was held in Culbertson, where two members of the Frazer team qualified for the State meet. Kalianna Blount placed fifth in pantomime and Marick Old Person placed sixth in spontaneous oral interpretation, punching their ticket for State.

Also placing at Divisionals was De'mon Grandchamp who placed seventh in Spontaneous Oral Interpretation; Takoa Old Person placed 12th in humorous interpretation and Ryan Beston took 12th in dramatic interpretation.

The Glasgow Speech and Drama team took home a third-place finish in Speech Team Sweeps this weekend and also had two individual champions, Connor Whitmer and Gabe Proctor.

Whitmer placed first in spontaneous oral interpretation and Proctor placed first in humorous oral interpretation. Kai Combs placed second in dramatic oral interpretation while Harley "Leon" Edwards placed third in dramatic solo. All four competitors qualified for the State. Meet with their Divisional placements.

Olivia Helland placed 10th in humorous solo.

Prior to the Divisional meet, both Frazer and Glasgow teams competed the first week of January. Frazer traveled to Dawson, where Blount placed fifth in pantomime, Marick Old Person placed fourth and Grandchamp placed fifth in spontaneous oral interpretation and T. Old Person placed 11th in humorous interpretation.

Glasgow's team had two days of competition, Jan. 5 and 6, in Billings. They completed three rounds that Friday, two preliminary rounds, semi-finals and finals on that Saturday.

Whitmer and Proctor placed second in their events, while Edwards placed fifth, Combs placed 18th and Helland, along with Ash James, placed 16th.

"The meet has multiple double A as well as A schools. We also saw a lot of western B/C schools which is so nice before State," reflected Coach Sheena Wilcox after the Billings meet.

Both teams will take this week to continue refining their pieces and practices before competing in State this weekend, Jan. 26 and 27. Good luck!
