Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Bringing Awareness To Red Ribbon Week

Glasgow Middle School students were busy last week as they decorated their classroom doors and participated in other activities in observance of Red Ribbon Week, which was held Oct. 23 through 31. With support from the Valley County Sheriff's Office and the Glasgow Police Department, the Middle School concluded with a door decorating contest and celebration with ice cream and pizza. Since law enforcement could not pick a clear winner from all of the hard work, the entire middle school received the pizza treat.

Opheim School also observed the week with designated theme days of "Peace Out To Drugs – Wear Tie Dye!," Follow Your Dreams, Don't Do Drugs – Wear Your Pajamas," "Rally In Red – Wear Red," and "Hats Off To Drugs, Wear a Hat!"

Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.

In 1988, National Family Partnership (NFP) sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families. The NFP and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver his message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign.
