Scotties Wipe Out the Wolves Win Homecoming Game 28-12

Glasgow made good on their 2023 Homecoming theme as they wiped out the Cut Bank Wolves in a 28-12 victory Sept. 29. The Scotties received first and scored on their first possession of the game, sending a packed stadium to its feet. A faked pass from quarterback Khye Gamas to Dillon Hughes put the Wolves back on their heels, opening up the field for a 46-yard rush by Toryn Richards into the end zone for a 6-0 Scottie lead just 2:06 into play.

Glasgow's defense stopped any Cut Bank attempt at evening the score on their first possession before a Scottie fumble gave the pigskin back to the Wolves. The defense forced a punt from the visitors, setting up Glasgow for a huge 75-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Babb, back in action after an injury, with 5:34 remaining in the first. The 12-0 lead for the boys in red held through the half though the action was not done.

Tavin Boland snagged his first interception late in the first quarter and came down with another Wolves pass early in the second. The Scottie sophomore nearly snatched another several minutes later. He would get his third steal of the game before the buzzer sounded at the half.

Back on the field after an extended halftime show featuring the Scottie Marching Band, the Saskatoon Police Pipes and Drums and the Hi-Line Cloggers, the Scotties kept the action and the cannon going. Glasgow successfully pulled off a rare onside kick, setting themselves up for another touchdown after a huge run by Tatum Hansen, in his first game of the season. Gamas connected with Babb on a 7-yard pass and on the two-point attempt to increase the Scotties' lead to 20-0.

The Wolves found their offense at 4:20 in the third on a 13-yard pass touchdown but the Scottie D-line stopped the PAT.

Glasgow's final score came at 9:13 in the final quarter when Hansen made a 24-yard run for the end zone, shedding would-be tacklers. Gamas found Richards on a shovel pass for the 2-point conversion and a 28-6 lead.

Cut Bank scored one more touchdown with 1:41 left on the clock. Their 2-point attempt was called back for a penalty and the re-attempt was stymied by Wyatt Sugg. The 28-12 Glasgow lead held through an attempted onside kick by the Wolves. The Scotties took the victory formation and closed out the game to notch their second home victory of the season.

Glasgow's win consisted of well-balanced team effort with numerous players contributing to stats sheets on both sides of the ball.

"Offensively, we did some good things in this one, making some big plays in both the run and pass game," offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow told the Courier. "Great to have Tatum back, he was a beast shedding tackles, turning losses into first downs. Him and Toryn in the back field will be a heckuva dual threat moving forward."

Glasgow put up 296 net yards offense, 311 total, with two turnovers: one interception and one fumble loss. Gamas notched 154 passing yards, going 7-for-24 with two touchdowns and one interception. Babb led on the receiving end with 82 yards on two catches with the two touchdowns. Richards added 62 yards on four receptions and Hansen had one catch for 10 yards.

Hansen led in rushing yards with 87 on 14 carries while Richards added 50 yards on 11 carries, each with a touchdown. Gamas had 11 carries for 44 yards.

"A lot of little things to clean up this week in practice. Small errors added up to a lot of drive killers," Tedrow said. "As we head back on the road to Conrad this week, we need to take a big step forward in minimizing mental mistakes and finishing off drives with points."

"The defense had a great first half, not allowing Cut Bank to score or even move the ball," Head Coach and defensive coordinator Patrick Barnett said. "Tavin Boland had another great night, having three interceptions. Vaughn [Miller] also had a great night defensively, with two picks and nine total tackles."

Glasgow held Cut Bank to 174 total yards, 91 passing and 83 rushing. Miller led the line with his nine tackles, five solo. Kohl Kittleson had six unassisted tackles while Myles Yoakam had four total tackles, three unassisted. Connor Hudyma, Richards, Liam Chapman, Kade Strommen and Jaydeen Hanshew each had three total tackles a piece. Babb, Coy Nelson, Boland, Sugg, William Kirkland and Rex Monson put up two tackles each with Andrew Linder, Gamas, Hughes, Hansen and Michael King adding one each to the stats sheet. Hansen and Kittleson each had a sack in the game with Linder also notching a block.

Richards put up 155 yards on five punts while Hansen had a 19-yard kick off return.

"Overall the defense played a great game, only allowing them to get under 200 yards of total offense. It is nice to get some guys back and be able to be running on all cylinders," Barnett said. "Toryn Richards, Vaughn Miller, Kohl Kittleson, and Tatum Hansen had a great night of football and won their last homecoming game."

Richards was presented with the Norm Thompson Award for outstanding player in the homecoming game.

The Glasgow JV squad won their Saturday morning tilt in Wolf Point 55-0.

The Scotties now sit at the top of the Northern B Standings with a 2-0, 2-4 overall records. Cut Bank is 1-1, 2-3; Malta 1-1, 2-4; Conrad 1-1, 2-3; Fairfield 1-1, 2-3, and Wolf Point 0-2, 1-5.

Glasgow is on the road this week, taking on the Cowboys in Conrad Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KLTZ Radio and the NFHS Network. Scottie JV football will be in Havre Monday, Oct. 9.
