Scottie Football Enters Conference Play 0-4

Drop 38-14 Road Game in Manhattan

Glasgow's struggles on the gridiron continued this past week with a road loss to Manhattan Christian but the game did highlight some improvement for the Scotties. Manhattan won 38-14 but the Scotties staved off another shutout with touchdowns from Khye Gamas and Kade Strommen. Defensively, Vaughn Miller and Toryn Richards stood out with double-digit tackles each.

Head coach and defensive coordinator Patrick Barnett noted, "The defense was able to make stops they were unable to do the past few weeks." On the other side of the pigskin, offensive coordinator Sam Tedrow said of the team's second half scoring, "Really proud of our kids for coming out of the locker room at halftime and rallying around each other. Khye and Toryn made some huge plays that put the defense on their heels and allowed us to take advantage. This led to a few sustained drives and a big touchdown by Kade Strommen on our final possession."

Manhattan was up 14-0 at the half with a touchdown in the first quarter and a touchdown and two point conversion in the second. They added a touchdown in the third to carry a 20-0 lead into the final quarter. They added a fourth touchdown early in the fourth before Gamas had a 64-yard run to put the Scotties on the board.

Manhattan answered shortly after to hold their lead but Glasgow fought on. Strommen came down with a 26-yard pass from Gamas for a second Scottie touchdown and Richards snagged a catch from the quarterback for the extra two. Manhattan sealed the win with another touchdown run with 30 seconds left in the game.

"We knew going in Manhattan's D-line was packed with studs and they really limited our ability to run the ball in the first half, putting us in a lot of third and long situations," Tedrow said. He added, "We really need to take a step forward as an offense and that second half seemed to be just that."

The Scotties had 180 net yards with five lost to a penalty for 175 total yards. Glasgow put up 96 yards passing and 79 yards rushing with no turnovers in the game.

Gamas went 10-for-24 on passes, averaging 4 yards per attempt. Richards caught six passes for 52 yards gain. Strommen had one catch, resulting in the team's second touchdown. Dillon Hughes added 18 yards on three catches.

Gamas also led in rushing, advancing 92 yards on seven carries. Richards added six yards on nine carries. Hughes had one carry but was pushed back three yards while Coy Nelson lost one yard on a single carry.

The Scotties went 3-for-20 on third downs and 1-for-1 on fourths.

Defensively, Glasgow gave up 243 rushing yards on 41 Manhattan attempts and 174 passing yards on 18 catches.

Miller led the D-line with 15 total tackles, 14 unassisted. He had two tackles for loss while adding a forced fumble and an interception to the stats sheet. Richards added 10 total tackles, nine solo. Strommen had eight tackles by himself while Connor Hudyma put up eight total tackles, three alone.

Kohl Kittleson had six takedowns, four solo. Andrew Linder added four tackles, Gamas and Myles Yoakam three each, and Hughes, Nelson, Tavin Bolland and Cade Hudyma one a piece.

Rex Monson had three kickoffs for 10, 12 and 14 yards. Gamas had 150 yards on seven punts. Richards put up 46 yards on two kick off returns while Liam Chapman advanced the ball seven yards on two returns. Boland and Strommen each had one return for two yards each.

Look for the offense to continue to grow as the season progresses. Tedrow said, "As we head into conference play we have to continue to build on that momentum and show what we can do." Barnett held his cards closer to his chest as he prepared for this week's game, "Malta will show up ready to play."

Glasgow takes on the Mustangs at Scottie Field this Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KLTZ radio and will be free on Nemont TV. The NFHS Network will also broadcast the game.

The Scotties lead the all-time series 32-26-2 but Malta has the winning record since both teams entered Class B play: 22-10. The Mustangs enter the contest 1-3 while Glasgow is 0-4 with both teams suffering numerous injuries in the first portion of the season.

The JV team hosted Culbertson Monday evening but the score was unavailable at press time. Glasgow's JV team will be in Wolf Point Saturday, Sept. 30, following the Scotties' homecoming football game Friday, Sept. 29, against Cut Bank.
