Scottie Volleyball Picks Up Two Conference Wins

Glasgow's volleyball team picked up two more wins this past week to improve their record to 3-0 in conference play. The Malta M-ettes took the Scotties to five sets but Glasgow took the win 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13 on the road Sept. 7. Glasgow hosted the Harlem Wildcats Sept. 9 and swept them 25-15, 25-20, 25-11.

"The Malta match was a battle, which is to be expected for most [of] our matches this year: the conference is very even!" said head coach Brooke Martin. "Harlem was a shorter match but they have a couple good hitters and blockers and they are mostly junior and senior players so that was a great victory for the girls."

The Scotties battled it out on the road Thursday as both teams lost a number of experienced players to graduation last year, leaving young squads eager to gain experience. Glasgow put 96 digs, 16 aces, 37 kills, 31 assists and 11 blocks on the stats sheet while Malta had 69 digs, 16 aces, 37 kills, 34 assists and seven blocks.

Macy Martin led the Scotties in digs with 21 and with 27 assists. Tatum Nyquist led in aces and kills with five and 11, respectively. Hayden Green stopped five Malta shots to lead in blocks.

The C squad lost their match in three sets 23-25, 21-25, 13-15, and the JV team lost their match 15-25, 13-25, 12-15.

The Scotties hosted the Wildcats Saturday and swept the visitors. Glasgow had nine aces, 26 kills, 24 assists, seven blocks and 29 digs in the match. Stats for Harlem were unavailable at press time.

Halle Hunter put up four of the team's aces and Joely Chappell had nine kills in leading the Scotties. Martin had 23 of 24 assists while Green knocked down six of the Wildcats' shots to lead in blocks. Nyquist had eight digs for Glasgow.

The C squad lost their match in three sets, 19-25, 17-25, 8-15 while the JV team won in four games 25-23, 22-25, 15-9, 15-13.

Coach Martin praised her young team for stepping into their roles this season. "As far as standouts, that's part of the beauty of this team this year! Tatum has been all-around amazing, especially on defense. She moves BEAUTIFULLY and has tremendous hustle," Martin said of her lone senior player.

"Hayden is dominant as a blocker and is literally a game changer. On any given night any hitter could step up to be kill leader and almost any player could be dig leader. Macy, Tatum and Jo have all been dig leaders this year. Same for aces – might be Macy and Jo, might be Tatum. Halle was ace leader against Harlem.

"So they are all able to step up depending on the match ups. Macy is getting into a great rhythm running the offense and mixing things up based on the matchups. Our freshmen Halle and Gina [Page] have been cool under pressure in these tight games. It's a really exciting start for us!" B. Martin enthused.

Glasgow hosts the Poplar Indians Friday, Sept. 15 for C, JV and varsity action beginning at 1 p.m. in Scottie gymnasium. Saturday, Sept. 16, they welcome the Class A Sidney Eagles to town for C, JV and varsity matches, starting with C squad at 1 p.m. All matches will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network.
