Hug Long And Hug Often

After being inspired by videos of people doing the event in bigger cities, Glasgow resident Brianna Leader stood in front of Soma Dis Deli on Aug. 29, to give and receive free hugs during the lunch hour. Wearing a blind fold for anonymity while giving and receiving, Leader stood with arms wide open for an hour while a poster hung beside her explaining the benefits of hugs.

A person craves a hug 13 times throughout the day, while it takes 20 seconds for a hug to have medical healing properties. However, the average hug only lasts three seconds. Giving eight hugs a day increases a level of oxytocin, a chemical linked to trust, morality and happiness.

"I fell in love with the the idea and have always wanted to do it in Glasgow. I just enjoy helping others," explained Leader for her motivation. "I know I don't get enough hugs during the day, so I'm sure others don't either.

A total of 14 people stopped by and took the challenge, with some even introducing themselves during the hug session. Owner of Soma Dis Deli Kyle Bilger stated those who came into the deli after their hug were all smiles and commenting how much better their day was because of Leader.
