Scottie Girls Sixth, Boys 17th at Billings XC Invite

Glasgow's cross country teams hit the ground running Aug. 25 at the Billings Invitational, the traditional start to the season for the Scotties. The girls varsity team earned sixth place with a team score of 187 and the boys team put up 375 points for 17th place.

"I was very pleased with everyone on Friday! It was an extremely competitive meet, as always. I don't think anyone had the race of their life, but we don't want that right now either. We worked pretty hard last week, and with a young team especially, they're going to struggle a little bit trying to race when they are tired," first-year head coach Tim Phillips told the Courier.

He continued, "But, I ran a comparison from the Billings meet last year and this year. They had a little worse weather last year, but I was still impressed with the overall improvement. I posted this on Facebook but had done the math by hand; it looked even better when I put it all in Excel.

"Our five girls that ran there last year cut six minutes and fifty-nine seconds off their 2022 combined times. And, for the boys, the seven returners cut off an amazing sixteen minutes and eleven seconds! Some of that has to do with summer running and some just from being older and stronger."

Tanae Baker and Emily See, both returning All-State runners, led the varsity girls, placing fifth and sixth overall out of 116 runners. Baker ran a 19:59.5 and See turned in a 20:04.0 time.

Kyler Holinde and KJ Ingram paced the varsity boys. Holinde placed 50th overall out of 144 racers with a time of 18:31.6. Ingram ran the course in 19:37.2 to take 75th place.

"We still have a ways to go, but Jami, Andrew and I are all extremely excited about the team possibilities this year," Phillips said.

The varsity teams will next compete at the Kalispell Invitational Friday, Sept. 1, while the JV squads will race the Poplar XC Invitational Saturday, Sept. 2.
