Northeast Montana Zombie Survival Camporee 2023

A Boy Scout Camporee and Cub Scout Day Camp was held recently at the Scout Park near Fort Peck June 23-25 under direction of the Buffalo Plains District of the Montana Council BSA with professional scouter Dave Snyder, of Lewistown,, organized by Patty Scanlan.

It was named the Northeast Montana Zombie Survival Camporee 2023. Scout Troops from Glendive, Glasgow and Malta, and Cub Scouts from Glasgow Pack 898 participated. There were 16 Scouts with 15 adults and staff, and 10 Cubs along with 22 leaders and parents who participated.

The theme was to practice skills to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. Take aim (archery), find your friends (search and rescue), where are you (compass and geocaching), food survival (tour fish hatchery and creative cooking contest), survive (wilderness survival and fire starting). The Cub Scouts built toy boats to race, took a hike to observe nature, stamped some leather, and went through an obstacle course.

The Boy Scouts were divided into four patrols of four each to rotate through the various skill stations. One of their challenges was to prepare a delicious meal using a limited number of ingredients that had to include Twinkies and Spam. Their Saturday evening campfire program included skits, songs, and a flag retiring ceremony to properly dispose of worn out flags along with appropriate narration and the playing of ‘taps.’
