Glasgow's high school and middle school band teacher, Dr. Brad Persinger, has been named as the VFW Montana Teacher of the Year. The award was publicly presented by the VFW's Art Widhalm at this year's Memorial Day ceremony.

Renowned Assiniboine artist William Standing will be featured at the Pioneer Museum in Glasgow in what could be the largest assembly of his art, sponsored by the Valley County Historical Society. The centerpiece of the show is "The Medicine Lodge," painted in 1929 at Gus Knapp's store in Oswego. The large oil painting features 25 Assiniboine lodge dancers, all identified and painted according to the specific medicine gifts carried throughout their lives.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is seeking comments on a proposal to realign and reconstruct about 1.8 miles of Highway 117, west of Nashua. The project begins at the north end of the Milk River Bridge and proposes reconstructing Hwy. 117 north for 1.8 mile, intersecting at U.S. 2.

Hi-Line Drag Strip in Malta held its first race of the 2013 season this past weekend. It was held in conjunction with The First State Bank of Malta Car Show. Saturday's sunshine brought out the show cars and race cars in droves, as well as the locals and many visitors to enjoy the cars and the pleasant weather.

Glasgow's bats were red-hot in a five-game tourney in Havre this weekend. The Red's outscored their opponents 66-7, clubbing their way to a sweep of their North-Star Tournament opponents.

In a written statement, the Boeing Company announced that it will be closing Glasgow Industrial Airport, its facility located at St. Marie, 17 miles north of Glasgow, Montana. The facility is operated by Montana Aviation Research Company (MARCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Boeing Company.

Construction is underway southwest of Opheim on a new compressor station to pump natural gas along Norther Border Pipeline Company's 969 miles of pipeline between Canada and hubs in Iowa. The industrial equivalent of a Boeing 747 jet engine will be installed in Compressor Station #1 on the Kerr Dam Road, according to engineering specialist Arnold Hill. He said the $20 million project will involve 370 people in the constructive phase.

Six local Angus breeders have been recognized by the American Angus Association for having registered Angus cow included in the association's 1998 Pathfinder Report. The breeders from Glasgow, with one cow each, are Glen and Stephanie Meier, Younkin Angus Ranch, and Dorothy Earys. The Gary Funk Angus Ranch in Frazer qualified six cows. In Richland, James Fossum had seven cows recognized, and Edwin Miner had one cow listed.

Glasgow's Joey Petrino was the Most Valuable Offensive Player for the north in the class B All-Star football game held at Billing's Senior High's Daylis Stadium on June 12. At quarterback, Petrino threw for 177 yards including three touchdown passes, and kicked three points after touchdown. The four MVPs were each awarded a belt buckle and a $125 scholarship.

Valley County Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing at 10a.m. Monday at the temporary courthouse in St. Raphael's parochial school to offer the public the opportunity to protest the proposed expenditure of $116,220 in federal revenue-sharing funds representing the first two quarterly payments this year.

The gasoline shortage that threatens to return rationing to the nation's automobiles, was felt in Glasgow Wednesday night. Both the City Council and the Glasgow School District 1 and 1A called for bids on gasoline and diesel fuel for the year 1973-74. The city got two bids and ended up paying 7.81 cents more per gallon of gasoline and 1.61 cents more on diesel fuel.

Mrs. Marge Martin laid down chalk for the last time when school doors closed for summer vacation ending a teaching career of 31 years.

Opheim – The fifth grade class members and their teacher, Mrs. Sam Gochenour, went on a field trip to Theony on the last day of school, Friday, to see a real ghost town Dan Theony joined the group in front of the old store and post office building and told the story of the old town which had a peak population of 36, including children.

Thursday, June 10, 1948

Robert S. Cotton, native of Valley county and former state senator, Tuesday filed his petition for nomination as state representative on the Democratic ticket at the primary election, July 20.

With major repairs made and new equipment added the Glasgow swimming pool will open Monday for the summer, Milt Kabeary, Civic Center manager, announced. Bob Bertsch has been appointed lifeguard, with Mrs. Kenneth K. Harlan again serving as pool matron.

The Fort Peck Engineers became the first team of the season to defeat the Glasgow VFW nine when they led all the way to come out on top 8 to 5 at Fort Peck Sunday afternoon. Fort Peck Really decided the contest in the first frame when it combined two hits and three errors to rack up a 3 to 0 lead.

Hinsdale – Construction of a relatively inexpensive irrigation project to put an additional 200 acres of good bottom land "under the ditch" will be completed soon in Hinsdale. The 100-foot siphon was installed under the highway at the Johnsrud corner, with a pipeline leading to it from a new pumping plant on Larsen land at the river. Ditches will carry the water to 100-acres fields on the Larsen and Faraasen properties.
