No bids to repair the roof of Glasgow's south side fire hall were received by the deadline last week. Director of Public Works Bob Kompel said three contractors picked up bid packets. He was following up with two of them to ask why they chose not to bid the project.

Derrick Simons graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., on Friday, May 24. Graduates numbering 1,047 marched through the rain to the 163rd commencement exercises that were held at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium to be sworn in as the newest members of the Navy. President Barrack Obama gave the commencement address, challenging the men and women to hold on to their values they have been taught through this difficult and trying time.

The Milk River at Glasgow jumped ahead of predictions and rose to 25.6 feet late Tuesday night. Flood stage is 25 feet, so there is minor flooding in low-lying areas. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service office in Glasgow is that the river will hold near 26 feet from Wednesday through Friday, and will be at 27.5 feet early on Sunday.

Dr. Cliff Montagne, of Montana State University's Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, brought grad students Lora Soderquist, Rebecca Kurnick, Badmagarav (Badmaa) Dovchin, and Sarina Bao (from Mongolia and Chinese-controlled Inner Mongolia) out to a Horse Ranch on Timber Creek for a seminar on Eastern Montana ranch ecology and management philosophy May 10 to 13.

Walt Dalbey was the only Reds pitcher to receive a loss in for games this weekend. The unquestioned ace of the staff was set to lead the Reds toå a four-game sweep of Glendive in the final game on Sunday. He threw five innings and only gave up three runs. But Glendive scored five unearned, as well, giving the Blue Devils a commanding 8-0 lead through four innings.

Defending champions JR Rasmusan and Norm Sillerud got off to a good start as they try to repeat as "Team of the Year" for the Fort Peck Championship Tournament. The duo took first place at the Rock Creek Tournament on Saturday with a top weight of 88.96 pounds.

Hobo the big black dog who eluded well-wishers last winter until she and her pups were finally captured in March, wanders no more. She has a home with Deb and John Partridge now and is on good terms with the resident sheltie, Mariah. "She is an affectionate dog," Partridge said. "She has adapted to family life. She has learned to whine for her walk and wants to run once in a while. She jumps into the pickup. She's a wonderful dog."

The fact that the Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament is increasing in popularity was confirmed on Monday, June 8, when the openings for this year's tourney hit 200, setting a record for the earliest date for filling. In fact, there is now a waiting list – the hopefuls who are waiting for someone to drop out so they will have a chance to participate in this premiere event.

Dinosaurs are being featured at the regional show of the Northwest Federation Gem and Mineral Society at MetraPark in Billings this weekend. At least seven of the ancient monsters will be on display, including a Chinese dinosaur loaned by Notre Dame Paleontologist Dr. Keith Rigby for the Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum display.

The Glasgow Middle School track team smashed eight records this season, including one dating back to 1984. The list of individuals and records set are: Brittany Archambeault's discus throw of 85' 2", Courtney Hanson's 100 meter and 200 meter hurdles times of 16.6 and 32.9 seconds respectively, April Molstad's 200 meter time of 29.5 seconds, Heather Hodges' triple jump of 27'9", Gavin Allen's discuss throw of 130'6", the girls' 1600 meter relay time of 4:37.8 set by Courtney Hanson, Katie Truscott, Margaret Bell and April Molstad, and the boys' 800 meter relay time of 1:58.3 set by Luke Morehouse, Steve Falcon, Jeff Grewe and Jeron Wesen.

June 7, 1973

Valley County has been approved as part of a seven-county area where the Montana Department of Livestock plans to use strychnine in an attempt to check the spread of an outbreak of rabies in the extreme northeastern porting of the state.

Kay Dorr, supervisor of the five county state Mental Health Center in Glasgow has prepared a series of articles under the heading "Lifestyles: No Right or Wrong" to appear in the Courier each week. The purpose of the series is to promote a greater understanding of mental health.

Country music stars Margie Singleton and Leon Ashley from Nashville, Tenn., will be appearing at 8 p.m., on Saturday in the St. Raphael school auditorium. Ashley scored a "first" in 1967 when he recorded his own composition of "Laura (What He's Got that I Ain't Got)." Margie Singleton is one of the top female country music stars of today. Dean Mathis is also featured on the show, he is famous for his recordings with the "Newbeats."

June 3, 1948

Final water tests were made this week on the 168 foot high steel surge tanks at the Fort Peck power plant, it was announced by Col. E. H. Walter, district engineer, Fort Peck District, Corps of Engineers. The surge tanks will serve as a safety and stabilizing feature in the operation of the power plant.

An electrical display and cooking school will be features of the annual stockholders' meeting of the Northern Electric Co-op. Inc., in Opheim Friday, June 11. The meeting will open with the display of electrical appliances followed by a house wiring demonstration. Of other interest is a cooking school demonstration of how to cook a complete meal via electricity.

Bob Hintz belted a single with two down and a man on in the bottom of the ninth Monday to break a 3-all deadlock and give the Glasgow Vets a 4 to 3 lead over the Wolf Point Independents, for their fourth consecutive win.

With high school ball already completed and the Independents underway, the third phase started off last week end when the Legion Juniors opened their season with a 13 to 5 victory over the Malta Juniors Sunday afternoon. The closest Malta came to being in the contest was when they scored a run in the fourth making it 7 to 1. Glasgow scored five more runs in the next frame.
