Opheim's Annual Memorial Day Program

The Charles Carignan American Legion Post of Opheim held the annual Memorial Day program on Monday, May 29, 2023, at the Opheim Community Church. The opening blessing was given by Commander of the Post Virgil Nelson followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by all in attendance.

The Star-Spangled Banner was sung by all, accompanied by pianist Mary Honrud.

Nelson introduced the guest speaker, Bob Bergstrom. Bergstrom was born in Opheim, attended all 12 grades of school in Opheim graduating in 1958. In 1959 he joined the United States Army. He served in New Jersey, Japan and Vietnam and received his discharge in 1962. In 1963 he went to work for Montana Power in Great Falls. He was the manager in Cascade and Harlem before retiring in 1995. Bergstrom told of his many memories from incidents during his lifetime, both civilian and military.

The entire group sang America The Beautiful accompanied by Honrud.

Nelson gave the closing prayer followed by the singing of My Country Tis of Thee.

A display table was set up for all to view, put together by Babe Floyd and her late husband Ken, of events and happenings of the Legion Post over the years.

A delicious roast beef dinner was served by the American Legion Auxiliary following the program.

Jim and Darlene Fossum and Cindi Solberg placed the American flags at the Lawndale Cemetery on Saturday.
