NC Boys 1-1 In Last Regular Weekend

The North Country boys basketball team went 1-1 in their final weekend of regular play. The Mavericks fell 71-10 to the undefeated Lustre Christian Lions on the road Friday. Saturday night in Saco they fended off a fourth-quarter run by the Frazer Bearcubs to win 57-53. North Country finished the regular season with a 4-6, 5-13 overall record.

The Mavericks fell behind early in Lustre, trailing 21-3 at the end of one. Lustre outscored North Country 25-3 in the second and led 62-6 heading into the final quarter. The Mavericks put up 4 in the fourth while Lustre added 10 the scoreboard.

Coy Bowman led the Mavericks with 4 points, hitting a three-pointer and going 1-for-2 at the line. Blaine Downing scored a basket from the court and Kade Strommen went 2-for-5 on free throws. Laytin Erickson scored a field goal for 2 points. North Country shot 42.9 percent from the line.

Lustre Christian was called for 12 fouls in the game, four in the second half, while North Country held theirs to nine, only two after halftime. Downing, Strommen and Erickson were each called for two while Bowman, Andrew Boucher and Walker Albus drew one whistle each.

North Country found far more offense the following night against Frazer, outscoring the visitors to Saco 21-10 in the first quarter. Frazer put up 16 in the second while holding North Country to 6, giving the Mavericks a 27-26 lead at the half. The Mavericks led 41-32 after three and fended off the Bearcubs’ 21-point fourth quarter showing with 16 points for the 4-point win.

Downing scored 19 for North Country, draining 3-of-4 free throws. Stommen hit for 15 with a 3-for-11 showing at the line. Erickson added 10 with a trey and a free throw. Jake Brown scored 7, Bowman 4 and Kenan LaBrie 2 points. The Mavericks shot 42.4 percent at the stripe.

Frazer was called for 19 fouls, 11 in the second half, while North Country had 15, 10 after the break. Downing, Strommen and Erickson had four fouls each. Bowman drew two and Austin Hanely one whistle.

The Mavericks enter the District 3-C Tournament as the fifth seed. They will play fourth-seed Dodson at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Glasgow High School gymnasium.
