NC Boys 0-2 For the Week

North Country's boys basketball team dropped both their games this past weekend. They lost a 60-41 conference game to Dodson Jan. 20 on the road before losing a non-conference matchup to Circle in Hinsdale the following night by a score of 70-60. The Mavericks now sit in fourth place in District 3C with a 2-4 conference record, 3-10 overall.

Dodson took the lead in the first quarter Friday, outscoring North Country 11-5. The Mavericks trailed 31-13 at the half and were outscored by a 2-point margin in the third quarter, 11-9. North Country rallied in the fourth with 19 points, powered by Blaine Downing's 16-points, but Dodson answered with 18 for a Coyotes' win.

Downing led the Mavericks with 21 points, including a three-pointer and 2-for-6 shooting at the free throw line. Kade Strommen added 8 followed by Coy Bowman with 6 points, including a trey and a 3-for-4 performance at the line. Kenan LaBrie, Laytin Erickson and Andrew Boucher added a basket each.

Dodson had 14 fouls while North Country was called for 16. Strommen fouled out of the game while Downing and Bowman each had four fouls. Jake Brown, LaBrie and Boucher drew one whistle a piece.

North Country found more offensive power in their game against the Circle Wildcats the following night but were unable to overcome the visitors. Circle led 17-11 after one quarter and 38-24 at the half. North Country outscored them 23-19 in a third quarter rally while both teams put up 13 points in the final eight minutes.

Downing powered the Mavericks with 33 points, hitting five three-pointers and 6-of-7 bonus shots. Bowman connected for 13 with three shots from downtown. Strommen also hit double-digit scoring with 10 points, going 2-for-2 on free throws. Brown and Boucher scored 2 points each.

North Country was called for 17 fouls, 11 in the second half, while Circle had 15 infractions, also 11 in the second half. Strommen again fouled out while Erickson had four fouls. Downing and Brown were each called for three while Bowman drew two whistles.

The Mavericks have one game this week, playing the Porcupines in Nashua Friday, Jan. 27. The boys game will start at 7:30 p.m., after the girls varsity game at 6 p.m.
