NC Girls Go To 11

The North Country girls basketball team, ranked the top Class C girls team in the state, improved to 11-0 overall, 5-0 in conference play, with wins over Lustre Christian and Frazer this past week. The Mavericks took a 56-14 win off the Lions Jan. 13 in Saco before taking a 77-11 road win over the Bearcubs the following night.

North Country took a 19-1 lead over Lustre in the first quarter and outscored the visitors 14-3 in the second quarter. The Mavericks led 51-12 after three and put up 5 in the fourth while holding the Lions to 2 points.

As a team the Mavericks had 17 offensive rebounds, 14 assists, 15 steals and six turnovers.

Teagan Erickson led with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Kora LaBrie added 11 points, two assists and two steals. Mattea McColly had 8 points and three assists while Kendall Scheffelmear added 4 points and eight rebounds.

Paige Wasson put up 6 points, BaiLee McColly 4, and Josie Brown 2. Sammie Wisher and Jessa Erickson both hit a free throw.

North Country held their fouls to six, only one in the second half, while Lustre Christian was called for nine infractions.

Wasson had two fouls while Shelbi LaBrie, Scheffelmear, K. LaBrie and Brown drew one whistle a piece.

The Mavericks pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and added 18 assists and 18 steals with eight turnovers in their win over Frazer Saturday.

Wasson led North Country with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals. T. Erickson scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three steals. M. McColly added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists while B. McColly had 8 points, six rebounds and four steals.

“Overall the Lady Mavericks are sitting 11-0 and playing great BB,” said head coach Amber Erickson. “We are playing aggressive defense creating a lot of turnovers and pushing the tempo but also playing disciplined. Our half court offenses are getting better every week and we are going to continue to break things down and focus on executing and doing little things right every day and every game.”

North Country returns to action Friday, Jan. 20, in Dodson. The Mavericks have a boys JV half-game at 5 p.m. followed by the girls varsity game at 6 p.m. and a boys varsity tip off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, the Mavericks host Circle in Hinsdale for Senior Night. The girls JV game is at 1:30 p.m. followed by a boys JV half-game at 3 p.m. Varsity girls hit the hardwood at 4 p.m. and the varsity boys tip off at 5:30 p.m.
