Pioneer Museum Hosts Winter Scavenger Hunt

The Valley County Pioneer Museum in Glasgow hosted a Christmas Scavenger Hunt Dec. 28 through 30, to provide a way to get the kids out of the house and into a different environment while on holiday break. Families of all ages came out to not only find the scavenger hunt items but to also take in the history of Valley County.

Museum supervisor Leta Godwin hid a total of 27 items throughout the displays of the Museum, including figurines, an ornament and a stocking. Participants only had to locate were 26 items, while a bonus item was also available to find. The figurines were all holiday and winter related, with Santa doing various activities including being asleep in a chair, soaking his feet and being next to a mailbox. There was also an ivory snowman jewelry holder, an old wooden Santa Claus and a boy throwing snowballs, among other small items hidden within the various displays.

When all 26 items were located, or a valiant attempt was made to locate all of the items, participants were treated to hot chocolate and cookies provided by the museum.

While locating the different items, participants experienced learning opportunities while touring the museum to find the items. Items were hidden in the dining room and school house displays, while those who participated also got to view the technology used for KLTZ broadcasts as well as older photography equipment and the hospital display, which included tools and equipment from when Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital was established in Glasgow. There was also a Church display with pews, a piano and various other local church memorabilia. Nobody forget to view the Scottie room which included all things Scottie including a cheerleader uniform, yearbooks and other memorabilia from the Glasgow Scottie history. When walking into the room, you were treated to the Glasgow Scottie song.

According to Godwin, approximately 60 people came to the museum and participated in the hunt over the course of the three days.

Though the museum will be closed during the month of January, they welcome all to come and visit when they reopen Feb. 1, with their hours of Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
