The North Country boys basketball team posted a 1-2 record over a busy weekend. The Mavericks fell to Nashua 58-36 in Hinsdale Dec. 15 but rebounded with a 57-50 win over Dodson in Whitewater the following night. North Country traveled to Circle Dec. 17 where they dropped a 73-44 contest.
North Country stood knotted with Nashua at 15 each at the end of the first quarter, powered by Blaine Downing who scored all 15 for the Mavericks with three treys and 2-for-2 shooting at the line. Nashua added 16 points in the second quarter while holding North Country to a single Downing free throw. The Mavericks added 8 points in the third but Nashua hit for 12 in the same period. The Porcupines outscored the Mavericks 15-12 in the final eight minutes.
Downing scored 27 points for North Country with four three-pointers and hitting 7-of-9 at the line. Kade Strommen hit four at the charity stripe, Austin Hanley drained a trey and Andrew Boucher added a field goal for the Mavericks.
Nashua had 14 fouls, split evenly between the halves, while North Country held theirs to eight, six in the second half. Hanley, Strommen and Laytin Erickson each drew two whistles while Downing and Boucher had one foul each.
North Country recovered Friday night after trailing Dodson 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Mavericks outscored the Coyotes 15-9 in the second quarter to lead 29-23 at the half. Dodson put up 13 in the third while holding North Country to 11 but the Mavericks responded with 17 in the final eight minutes, 3 more points than the Coyotes scored.
Downing again powered the Mavericks, hitting for 34 points with a trey and 7-for-11 shooting at the free throw line. Strommen hit 7-of-7 bonus shots and added 11 points while Coy Bowman also put another 7 points on the score sheet. Boucher added a bucket and a free throw and Erickson hit a field goal.
Dodson had 21 fouls, 11 in the second half, while North Country drew 13 whistles, six in the second half. Downing and Bowman each had four while Strommen was called for two fouls. Erickson, Jaydeen Hanshew and Boucher had one infraction a piece.
The Mavericks faced a tougher court in Circle, trailing 22-9 at the end of one quarter. They were outscored 17-13 in the second. Circle led 57-33 at the end of the third and outscored North Country 16-11 in the final eight minutes.
Downing led with 25 points off 11 field goals and 3-for-4 shooting at the line. Strommen hit 3-of-5 bonus shots and two field goals for 7 while Bowman added 6 points on three shots from the court. Erickson drained a three-pointer and Hanley added a bucket while Boucher went 1-for-2 at the line.
Circle had 15 fouls while North Country had 10, split evenly between the halves. Strommen fouled out of the game. Downing drew the officials' attention three times while Erickson had two fouls.
North Country next hits the hardwood Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, in Saco where they host the Glasgow Scotties. The girls varsity plays at 6 p.m. followed by the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, the Mavericks travel to Scobey to take on the Spartans with the girls playing at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
