Glasgow Hosts 10th Annual Class C Showcase

Lustre Christian Boys Roll To Two Wins

The Lustre Christian boys basketball team kicked off the 2022-23 season with two decisive wins at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow this past weekend. The Lions defeated Malta's JV team Friday by a 56-23 margin and rolled over Wolf Point's JV 78-35 Saturday.

Lustre wasted no time in establishing their lead over Malta, running up a 20-3 lead after one quarter. Both teams put up 6 points in the second quarter before Lustre reestablished control in the second half. The Lions held the Mustangs to 7 points in both the third and fourth quarters while putting 17 and 13 points up on their side of the scoreboard.

Lustre showed the depth of their bench with balanced scoring as all 10 players suited out scored in the win. Braden Ewing led the team with 10 points followed by Johnslee Pierce and Elijah Lenihan with 8 each. Pierce hit two shots from downtown. Clay Reddig added 7 while Cayden Klatt and Jasiah Hambira put up 6 each.

Byron Ewing scored 4 points and Alex Chen hit a three pointer with Bryan Chen and Gabe Alves hitting a bucket each.

Malta held their fouls to six in the game, four in the second half, while Lustre had 16 infractions.

Alves was called for four fouls while Lenihan had three. Reddig, Pierce and Hambira had two each. B. Chen, A. Chen and By. Ewing were called for one foul a piece.

Saturday, the Lions faced the Wolves. Lustre took control of the game in the first quarter with a 14-7 lead and increased it to 42-20 by the half. The Lions added another 22 points in the third quarter while holding the Wolves to 7 points. In the final quarter Lustre outscored Wolf Point by a 14-8 margin.

Hambira put up 26 points for the Lions on 11 field goals and going 4-for-6 at the line. Lenihan added 15 and Klatt hit for 14, including four three-pointers.

A. Chen and Br. Ewing added 6 each while Reddig added 5 points. B. Chen, Pierce and By. Ewing added a field goal a piece.

Malta had 13 fouls with eight in the first half while Lustre had 20 infractions, nine in the first half. Br. Ewing was called for four while B. Chen and Hambira both had three fouls. Alves, Lenihan, Pierce and By. Ewing were each called for two while A. Chen and Klatt had one a piece.

The Lions will attend the 2022 Scobey Basketball Tip Off Tourney this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10. Lustre will play Fairview at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and face Plentywood at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lustre Christian Girls Start 1-1

The Lustre Christian girls basketball season lost a tight game to the Malta JV team before rebounding to beat Augusta at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow this past weekend. The opening games of the Lions' 2022-23 season saw them fall 46-45 to the M-ettes Friday before roaring back to a 49-33 victory over the Elks Saturday.

Lustre fell behind Malta 10-7 after one and trailed 26-19 at the half. The Lions battled back in the second half outscoring the M-ettes 11-10 in the third and 15-10 in the fourth. They took the game to the final buzzer but still found themselves a point short of overtime.

Alexa Reddig led the team with 18 points with a trey and hitting 3-for-6 at the free throw line. Aubri Holzrichter added 13 points with a trey and 3-for-5 shooting at the line. Grace Brown connected on 4-of-8 free throws and scored 12 points. Hope Marottek added a bucket for the Lions.

Malta had 19 fouls, nine in the first half, while Lustre held their fouls to eight, split evenly between the halves.

Brown was called for four and Holzrichter had two fouls. Abby Olfert, Reddig and Marottek each had one foul.

Saturday, the Lions defeated the Elks after taking a 15-7 first quarter lead. Lustre increased that lead to 30-9 at the half and 45-20 after three quarters. Augusta rallied in the final quarter with 13 points while holding Lustre to 4 but were unable to overcome the Lions.

Redding led the Lions with 26 points, going 4-for-5 at the line. Holzrichter hit two from downtown and went 3-for-4 on free throws for 13 points. Brown hit 4-of-5 bonus attempts and added 8 points. Hannah Brown scored a field goal.

Augusta was called for 16 infractions, nine in the first half, while Lustre had 12 fouls, five in the first half.

Holzrichter and G. Brown each had three while Reddig and H. Brown were called for two a piece. Olfert and Marottek had one foul each.

Lustre will attend the 2022 Scobey Basketball Tip Off Tourney this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10. The Lions take on the Fairview Warriors at noon on Friday and face the Plentywood Wildcats at noon on Saturday.

North Country Girls Earn Two Victories

North Country's girls basketball team dominated their first two games of the 2022-23 season at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow this past weekend. The Mavericks rolled over the Augusta Elks 78-21 Friday and downed the Terry Terriers 61-20 Saturday.

Augusta held a lead early in the game Friday but once North Country got fired up there was no stopping the Mavericks. The Mavericks went up 22-10 after one quarter and held a 50-16 lead at the half. North Country outscored Augusta 17-3 in the third quarter and 11-2 in the final eight minutes of play.

Paige Wasson led all scorers with 32 points including four shots from downtown. Shelbi LaBrie added 10 points and Mattea McColly connected on three field goals and a free throw for 7 points. Kora LaBrie, Kendall Scheffelmear and Jessa Erickson added 6 a piece while Teagan Erickson hit for 4 points. Sammie Wisher, Ava Hanley and Josie Brown added 2 points each and Berkley Hillman hit a free throw.

Augusta was called for 12 infractions in the game, seven in the first half, while North Country held their fouls to nine, five in the first half.

K. LaBrie, T. Erickson and Wasson each had two fouls while Wisher, J. Erickson and Brown had one a piece.

Saturday the Mavericks took a 29-5 lead over the Terriers after one quarter. North Country outscored Terry 12-2 in the second quarter and 15-8 in the third to carry a 56-15 lead into the final quarter. Both teams hit for 5 points in the fourth.

Wasson again led in points with 18, including three treys. She was followed closely by T. Erickson who added 17 points with one trey and 2-of-2 at the line. McColly added 10 points on three field goals and 4-for-7 shooting on bonus shots. S. LaBrie hit a trey and a field goal for 5 points and Scheffelmear connected on two from inside the arc. J. Erickson added 3 points while Hanley and Brown both hit a field goal.

Terry had 13 fouls in the game, seven in the first half, while North Country was called for 14 infractions, eight in the first half.

J. Erickson and Wisher each had three fouls while K. LaBrie, Wasson and Brown were called for two a piece. McColly and Scheffelmear each drew one whistle in the game.

The Mavericks will attend the Lewistown Showcase Tournament this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10. North Country will face Fort Benton at 7 p.m. and take on defending state champions, Roy-Winifred Outlaws, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

North Country Boys Split Games

The North Country boys split their games at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow to start their 2022-23 basketball season. The Mavericks defeated the Harlem JV team 63-35 Friday before falling to Terry by a score of 75-33.

North Country went up 14-5 over Harlem after one quarter and increased their lead to 33-14 by halftime. The Mavericks outscored the Wildcats 10-8 in the third and 20-13 in the final quarter for the win.

Coy Bowman led in scoring with 19 points, hitting five three-pointers and going 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Blaine Downing was right behind him with 18 points. Austin Hanley added 9, Laytin Erickson 6, Kade Strommen 5 and Andrew Boucher 4 points.

North Country held their fouls to 10 in the game, six in the first half, while Harlem had 15 fouls, eight in the first half.

Bowman was called for three while Downing and Strommen each had two fouls. Hanley, Erickson and Boucher had one a piece.

Saturday the Mavericks faced a tough Terriers team. Terry held a 17-12 lead after one and North Country trailed 38-19 at the half. The Mavericks put up 11 points in the third quarter to the Terriers' 16 but in the final quarter Terry scored 21 while holding North Country to 3 points.

Downing had 12 points to lead the Mavericks with a trey and hitting 3-of-3 at the line. Bowman added 11 points with two from downtown and 3-of-7 bonus shots. Hanley added 4 points on a three and a free throw while Strommen hit two field goals for 4 points. Erickson added 2 points from the field.

Terry was called for 20 fouls, split evenly between the halves, while North Country drew an official's whistle 17 times, five in the first half.

Downing and Strommen fouled out of the game. Bowman was called for three while Hanley and Erickson each had two fouls.

North Country travels to Lewistown this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10, for the Lewistown Showcase Tournament. North Country will face Fort Benton at 8:30 p.m. Friday and the Denton/Geyser/Stanford Bearcats at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Nashua Boys 0-2 in Opener

The Nashua boys basketball team started their 2022-23 season at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow Dec. 2 and 3. The Porcupines lost their first game to a hot-shooting Turner squad by a score of 69-62. On Saturday, Nashua lost to the Malta JV team by a 10-point margin, 59-49.

Nashua, under first-year coach Travis Nielsen, faced a Turner team that made far more shots than they missed early in the game and found themselves trailing 18-14 after one quarter. By the half, the Porcupines trailed by 9 points, 37-28. Turner carried a 55-41 lead into the final quarter.

Nashua rallied in the fourth with 21 points while holding Turner to 14 but when the final buzzer sounded, the Porcupines were still behind by seven points.

The Porcupines had three players hit double digits in scoring: Grady Nielsen, 24; Caden Laumeyer, 17, and Xander Pugh, 12. G. Nielsen went 6-for-9 at the free throw line and hit nine field goals. Laymeyer hit seven from the field and went 3-for-7 on bonus shots. Pugh hit two three-pointers and went 2-for-5 at the line. Kevan Viste hit a three pointer and added 6 points while Damon Adkins added a shot from beyond the arc.

Turner had 20 fouls in the game split evenly between the halves while Nashua held their infractions to 15, seven in the first half.

Nielsen and Viste were both called for four while Pugh had three and Laumeyer two. Charlie Kaasa and Adkins were each called for one foul.

Saturday, Nashua held close with Malta through the first half, leading 16-15 after one and trailing by a point at the half, 26-25. The Mustangs surged in the third quarter with 20 while holding the Porcupines to 7 points. Nashua rallied in the final quarter with 17, at the same time keeping Malta to 13, but still found themselves on the wrong side of a 59-49 score at the final buzzer.

G. Nielsen and Pugh led the Porcupines with 15 points each. G. Nielsen had one trey and went 6-for-10 at the line and Pugh hit three from downtown. Laumeyer added 9 points followed by Adkins with 6, including a three-pointer, and Viste with four, going 2-for-2 at the line.

Malta had 13 fouls, seven in the second half, while Nashua held their infractions to 10, seven also in the second half.

Pugh and G. Nielsen each had three fouls, Adkins two, with Viste and Laumeyer getting called for one each.

Nashua hosts the Glasgow C and JV teams this Friday, Dec. 9. The Porcupines JV team will play the Scotties C at 4:30 p.m. with the Varsity team playing Glasgow's JV at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nashua hosts Wibaux with the JV teams playing at 2:30 p.m. and the Varsity squads meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Nashua Girls Drop Heartbreaker

Nashua's girls basketball team started their 2022-23 season at the 10th Annual Class C Showcase in Glasgow this past weekend. The Porcupines fell to Turner 39-34 on Friday and lost 56-31 to the Malta JV team on Saturday.

Nashua hit the court against Turner with only five players on Friday, missing two starters who had not been able to attend the requisite number of practices. The five players showed determination in game one, taking an 8-6 lead after one quarter and carrying an 18-13 lead into the second half.

The Porcupines led by three after three, 28-25, but the Tornadoes rallied in the final quarter with 13 points and held Nashua to 6 for the Turner win.

Tia Dees led Nashua in points with 18, hitting eight field goals and going 2-for-4 at the free throw line. Alexis Murdock and Gracyn Sibley both added 6 points on three field goals each and Kaitlyn Miller hit two from the floor for 4 points.

Turner had six fouls in the game, two in the first half, while Nashua had 10 fouls, split evenly between the halves. Miller and Dees each had three while Murdock and Sibley were called for two a piece.

Saturday, Nashua faced Malta. The M-ettes leapt out to a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Porcupines held even in the second as both teams put up 12 points. Malta padded their lead after the half with 17 points in the third and 14 in the fourth, while holding Nashua to 4 and 6 points in those same quarters.

Dees again led in scoring with 21 points on eight field goals and hitting 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. Miller addd 5 on one field goal and 3-for-4 shooting at the line. Guinevere Abern hit a three-pointer and Murdock added a bucket for 2 points.

Malta had 15 fouls, eight in the first half, while Nashua was called for 14 fouls, 10 of which came in the second half.

Sibley and Miller had four fouls each while Murdock and Abern had three a piece. Sibley was called for one infraction.

The Porcupines host the Glasgow Scottie C and JV teams Friday, Dec. 9. Nashua's JV team will play Glasgow's C at 3 p.m. while the varsity Porcupines take on the Scottie JV team at 6 p.m. Saturday, the Porcupines welcome Wibaux to Nashua for a varsity game at 4 p.m.
