Glasgow Middle School Boys Win Sidney Invitational

Glasgow's middle school girls team won the Sidney Invitational cross country meet on Saturday, dominating a competitive field on the longest and toughest course of the year. The Glasgow girls took third place as a team.

The Scottie boys combined for just 34 team points to finish ahead of host Sidney and a dozen other schools from eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Glasgow boys were paced on the 3-kilometer (1.8-mile) course by 7thgrader Garrett Thompson, who finished in 6th place overall with a time of 11:34. But what gave Glasgow the team title was the tight pack of Scotties among the race's leaders.

The second Scottie runner was 7th grader Jack Milam, 10th place in 12:07, 7th grader Ian Anderson, 11th in 12:12, 8thgrader Rowan Kloker 14th in 12:20, 6th grader Nik Kulczyk 19th in 12:49, and 6th grader Holt Huntsman 20th place in 12:55. Other Glasgow boys who contributed to the team effort included: 6th graders Daniel Bailey (40th in 14:36) and Paxton Wesen (45th in 14:56), 7th grader Aaron Mickelson (52nd in 16:18), and 6th grader Jacob Bailey (61st in 18:22).

"The GMS boys put on a clinic on the power of pack running," says coach Andrew McKean. "Ian had the best race of his season, bridging Garrett with the other top boys. Even our boys who didn't score points pushed other team scores back, allowing us to beat Sidney by 22 points and a strong poplar team by 34 points."

On the girls side, the two Scottie leaders-8th grader Haleigh Huntsman and 6th grader Alexa Ball-finished in the top 10, but that wasn't enough to pull the girls to the top team finish. The Scotties took 3rd place behind powerhouse Poplar, and just two points behind Wolf Point. Huntsman took 7th place in 12:25; Ball took 8th place just a second back, in 12:26.

Other GMS runners included: 6th grader Harper Wesen (24th in 13:37), 8th grader Jensina Tweten (26th in 13:40), 6thgrader Ryder Bilger (34th in 14:30), 7th grader Willow Sugg (48th in 15:18), 7th grader Amiya Ryan (54th in 16:03), 6thgrader Harper Thompson (56th in 16:27), 8th grader Rebekah Bailey (58th in 16:46), 8th grader Aspen Probert (59th in 17:04), and 7th grader Romie Zumbuhl (65th in 18:26).

The course, at the Sidney Golf Club, was a mix of flat terrain with hairpin turns, and a challenging hill that dropped to a long finish. Middle schoolers generally run 1.5 or 1.55 miles, so the 3 kilometer course caused runners' times to be longer than normal.

"That bummed some kids out, as we try to achieve new personal-record times at each meet," says McKean, "but they'll get a chance to turn in the fastest times of the season on Friday in Harlem. It's our last meet of the season, and the last chance to secure a goal time that some kids have been chasing all season."
