Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital (FMDH) has welcomed two new faces over the past few months in the Glasgow Clinic Specialty Care with the addition of Dr. Kevin Cahill as a general surgeon and Dr. William Meszaros as an orthopedic surgeon. Though both providers come from different backgrounds, they are excited to help serve Valley County and provide their services locally in order to save patients the trip out of town for these medical needs.
Dr. Cahill, who started at FMDH in May, is originally from Stockton, Calif., and calls Truckee, Calif., home which is near the Tahoe area. He has been practicing for eight years after completing medical school at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles and his general surgery internship and residence at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, in Santa Barbara, Calif. He admits general surgery was the only sector he liked and really enjoys the medical field due to it being mentally stimulating, stating "I find the challenges in general surgery unique and I'm motivated to help the patients recover from gastrointestinal issues."
Though he is serving as a general surgeon, he admits his primary skill set is endoscopy and laparoscopy, performing approximately 500 colonoscopies/endoscopies per year. "Routine screening is important and it's not something that should be avoided. It's preventable medicine," he stressed.
Alternating his schedule with general surgeon, Dr. Graf, he will be working 10 to 15 days a month providing services and then will travel back to California to enjoy time with his wife, two children and dog. His hobbies include hiking, skiing, backpacking and swimming, though he admits he doesn't get to do as much of those things anymore because of young kids. "I love taking my kids to the park, the lake and swimming pool. In the summertime, we live at the pool," said Cahill.
Though working in rural medicine can be a change of pace, Cahill is used to it as he has worked a lot in the rural medicine sector during his eight years of practice. "I have worked all over the western United States. My passion is to take call because I see the most interesting stuff. It's often big open cases and very exciting," he explained.
Dr. Meszaros, who started in July, is originally from Michigan but now calls Arizona home. The medical field wasn't his first choice of career, as he graduated from Michigan State University with a computer engineering degree. After graduation, he moved to Arizona and worked for McDonnell Douglas working on Army helicopters. After a few years, he decided he wanted to do something different with life. After shadowing doctors and the emergency room he made the career change to medicine. He completed medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, in Tucson, Ariz., and completed his internship and residency at Northwestern University Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Chicago, Ill. He then did a fellowship at San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at University of California San Diego. "As an engineer things are kind of black and white. In medicine you meet and see all kinds of people you wouldn't get as an engineer," he said.
He decided to pursue the orthopedics sector due to his previous education. "I like being able to use science. I am a science nerd. Orthopedics is just a good fit with my engineering background," Dr. Meszaros explained. He admits he enjoys working on the shoulders, specifically calling rotator cuff repairs one of his favorite surgeries to do. In addition to being a provider at FMDH, he owns a private practice in Arizona and will split his time between the two facilities. "The kids are grown and I have time, so decided to have a different change of pace," he explained on why he decided to take this opportunity.
He admits he likes the small town feel of Glasgow and Montana isn't that new to him as he had lived in Kalispell previously. "I just got this feeling when looking at the opportunity that it's an adventure and something different," he stated. He feels Glasgow is a really good fit since he is an outdoor person, stating "I golf, hike and I'm just getting into hunting and fishing." He also admits he is a self-taught beginner guitarist.
With these additions, the Glasgow Clinic Speciality Care general surgery now has two providers, Dr. Graf and Dr. Cahill, while orthopedics is now available 24/7 with Dr. Harris, Dr. McCarthy and Dr. Meszaros. OB/GYN coverage will soon have a two person rotation with Dr. Maya and Dr. Amy Hopstad starting in September.
If you would like to schedule a self-referral appointment for any of these specialities, please call the FMDH Glasgow Clinic Specialty Care at 406-228-3536.
