Dueling Canoes

'Titanic Challenge' Raises Nearly $2,000

Despite being up the pool without a paddle, competitors in the Titanic Challenge raised $1,980 for the Valley County Community Pool Campaign June 12. Eleven teams of three hit the pool in canoes and armed with buckets with the goal of sinking – or at least taking on less water than – their opponents.

After a calcutta and pre-competition interview (teams were unwilling to share their strategies) with auctioneer Brian Austin, the rounds of competition began to the soundtrack of peals of laughter and delighted exclamations.

Scottie XC: Kyler Holinde, Lane Thompson and Reed Larsen; The Misfits: Jordan Radakovich, Brianna Leader and Kayla Larson, and The Guards: Alaina Cox, Zandora Longtree and Tarin Vandall, battled first to the delight of the crowd. Scottie XC was unsinkable, moving to the semifinals.

Up next was was the Holy Canoles: Alexa Bell, Cora Nelson and Amiya Ryan: Young Guns: Jacob Bell, Austin Nelson and Saunten Gamas, and Doodle Boppers: Rylee Birkoski, Rylan Schultz and Ava Schultz. The Holy Canoles moved on to the semifinal round.

Team: Rex Monson, Noah Leckie and Khye Gamas; Wet Fuzz: Scott Campbell, Josh Ames and Parker Rapper, and Motor Boaters: Jayson Nelson, Cameron Nelson and Jace Ball, were next to take seats in the canoes. Wet Fuzz washed out quickly leaving Team and Motor Boaters doing battle with Team moving on to the semifinals.

In the last match of the first round Scottie Moms: Lisa Ball, Nichole Gamas and Chrissa Nelson, took up the water fight against Paw Patrol: Jensina Tweten, Linley Fulton and Cayley Jankowski. Paw Patrol took down the Scottie Moms to move on to the next round.

The downed crews were moved into the second chance bracket. The Misfits outlasted the Young Guns and Scottie Moms to keep their championship hopes alive. The Guards outperformed the Doodle Boppers to advance while Wet Fuzz was sent to the dryer by the Motor Boaters.

The Misfits conquered their round against The Guards and Motor Boaters and advanced to the championship round. Paw Patrol won their round against Scottie XC and Holy Canoles to also advance to the final round. Scottie XC stayed alive by defeating Holy Canoles and Motor Boaters in the second semifinals.

At the end of the final round, The Misfits: Jordan Radakovich, Brianna Leader and Kayla Larson swam away with the inaugural Titanic Challenge title. Paw Patrol: Jensina Tweten, Linley Fulton and Cayley Jankowski came in second and Scottie XC: Kyler Holinde, Lane Thompson and Reed Larsen took home the bronze.

The Challenge was emceed by Rod Karst, who was assisted by Ruth Ann Hutcheson. The Valley County Community Pool Campaign extended their thanks to Nemont for videoing, Austin for auctioneering, the Boys Scouts (Lane Thompson, Blake Lloyd, and Mike Carney) for providing the canoes, Katie Potter and the GHS Student Council for the sound system and Jace Ball for the idea.

Look for volunteers of the Valley County Community Pool Campaign to be out and about during the GHS All Class Reunion, continuing their efforts raising funds to replace the Glasgow City Pool.
