Bantam Ice Dawgs Second at State in Butte

Glasgow's Bantam Ice Dawgs claimed second at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association State A Tournament in Butte this past weekend. The Ice Dawgs skated through their first two pool games, defeating Whitefish 10-2, and downing Butte 9-5, before running into an undefeated Bozeman team.

In their final game of pool play – and with a guaranteed spot in the championship game – the Dawgs fell to the Icedogs 10-0. The teams faced each other again the chipper where Bozeman maintained their perfect record with an 8-0 victory.

Glasgow hit the ice at 8 a.m. Friday against Whitefish in their first game of the tournament. Coach Michael Hunter said his team "was looking to make a statement and they did."

The Ice Dawgs took a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal from Hudson Honey. Brody Hansen had the assist 6:22 into play.

Glasgow turned up the offensive power in second period with four goals while their defense held Whitefish to a single score before intermission. Bode Barnett lit up the scoreboard for the Dawgs just 1:14 into the second period. He netted another goal 24 seconds later with help from Hansen.

Cullen Wallace, assists Liam Alves and Zachary Stevens, scored Whitefish's only goal of the second period before Glasgow retook the puck.

Charlie Cornwell scored Glasgow's fourth goal with help from Tavin Boland while Boland netted the Dawgs' fifth goal with an assist from Honey.

The Dawgs did not slow down after the intermission, doubling their score in the final 16 minutes. Barnett scored the first 30 seconds into the third and C. Cornwell scored the next with help from Barnett and Hansen. Alves scored a power play goal with Glasgow's Landon Honey in the box for holding before turning the puck back over to the Dawgs.

Barnett scored his hat trick with less than five to play and JP Cornwell netted a goal with help from Barnett. Hallie Hunter scored the Dawgs' only power play of the game, putting a puck past the Whitefish netminder with help from Hansen with one second left on the clock.

Glasgow went 1-for-4 on the man advantage while allowing Whitefish only three power plays. L. Honey sat for holding in the second. Boland, tripping, and C. Cornwell, roughing, were sent to the sin bin in the third period.

Jacob Potter turned in a 92.9 save percentage in the win, turning away 26 shots on his net. Glasgow put a total of 56 pucks on the Whitefish netminders.

The Dawgs were back on the ice Friday night for an 8 p.m. game against Butte. Hunter called the game a grind for his small team but expressed pride in the Dawgs' stepping up to play a physical game.

Glasgow struck first in their 9-5 win with Barnett lighting up the scoreboard 1:25 into play. Less than a minute-and-a-half later, he doubled the Dawgs' lead with help from L. Honey. Nearly five minutes later, Barnett netted the natural hat trick with an assist from C. Cornwell. J. Cornwell, assist Hansen, made it 4-0 for Glasgow.

Colby Jensen, assist Colt Hassler, and Branden Harrison, assists Rigley Vincent and Hassler, but Glasgow's lead in half before the buzzer indicated the end of the first period.

Each team put up a goal in the second period. Hansen, assists Barnett and JP Cornwell, scored for Glasgow while Harrison, assist Kellen Bragg, put a puck past Potter for Butte, giving Glasgow a 5-3 lead at intermission.

The Copper City Kings cut the Dawgs' lead to one 1:22 into the third period on a goal by Jacob Ryan, assists Mason Hintz and Thomas Baumer. JP Cornwell answered a minute-and-a-half later with assists from Kimber Dulaney and Barnett. Barnett put Glasgow ahead by 3 on a power play.

Just over a minute later the Dawgs doubled the Copper City Kings' score on another Barnett power play goal. L. Honey was credited with the assist.

Hassler cut Glasgow's lead back to 3 with help from Vincent and Colby Jensen. Barnett netted his second hat trick of the game, and putting Glasgow up by 4 goals again. JP Cornwell and C. Cornwell assisted on the final goal of the game.

Glasgow gave the officials more of a workout in their second game, racking up 23 minutes and 30 seconds of penalty time on 10 infractions. Butte was called for 7 penalties, earning 10 minutes and 30 seconds in the sin bin.

Boland and Barnett took involuntary seats in the first period, both on roughing calls.

C. Cornwell, holding and Barnett, hooking, were sent to the penalty box in the second period.

Boland, hooking; L. Honey, interference, and Barnett, hooking, drew minors in the third period. Hunter drew a 1:30-and-10 head contact.

Potter made 37 saves on 42 shots in the crease for an 88.1 save percentage. Glasgow's offense fired 43 pucks at Jaxon Kruzich in the Butte net.

Glasgow then came up against a powerhouse Bozeman team. The Icedogs scored 1:57 into the game and never looked back. They added three more goals before the end of the first period while shutting Glasgow out.

Bozeman continued the offensive onslaught in the second period with an additional five goals. The Dogs added their 10th, and final, goal in the third period.

Potter saw 38 total pucks between the pipes for a 73.7 save percentage. Glasgow put only 19 shots on Luke Lakatos in the Bozeman net.

Each team had four man advantages with Bozeman converting on one. The Dogs had 16 minutes in the box on five infractions while Glasgow earned 26 minutes on six calls.

Barnett was called for a boarding minor and a boarding misconduct in the first while L. Honey also took a seat on a minor holding minor.

C. Cornwell drew a slashing minor and a checking from behind 1:30-and-10 in the third.

The championship game on Sunday proved to be another canine fight as the Ice Dawgs and the Icedogs battled again.

Bozeman again took an early lead, scoring three minutes into the chipper. They put two more pucks past Potter in the next 13 minutes. The Icedogs lit up the scoreboard early in the second with two even strength goals before adding a PPG and a shortie before intermission.

Glasgow held Bozeman to a single goal in the third as Bozeman went on to win 8-0.

Potter faced 33 shots in net while the Dawgs' offense put 26 pucks on the Bozeman goalie.

The Ice Dawgs held their penalties to one – a roughing call on Hunter in the second – while the Icedogs were called for eight infractions.

M. Hunter, who saw his team moved up from B to A competition, expressed pride over his team's battle against the Bozeman Icedogs. "Couldn't be prouder."
