Perseverence Pays Off for Porcupines

Nashua Boys Notch Two Wins

Nashua's boys basketball team, back to full strength after battling illness and injuries, notched their first two wins of the season this past weekend. The Porcupines avenged earlier season losses with wins over Frazer, 62-39, and Brockton, 51-39.

"The boys played well," said head coach Anthony Bengochea. "We're starting to click now."

The team traveled to Frazer Friday to face a short-handed Bearcubs squad. The Bearcubs had won the first match-up of the season, Frazer's first of the year, and Nashua wanted to even the record.

Frazer went up 14-5 after one, but Nashua came on strong in the second with 20 points to carry a 25-19 lead into halftime. Another 20 points in the third propelled Nashua to a 45-25 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Frazer rallied with 14 points, but Nashua scored another 17 to secure the victory.

Xander Pugh hit three shots from downtown and went 3-for-5 at the free throw line in scoring 20 points for the Porcupines. Grady Nielsen added 17 points in his role as sixth man. Damon Adkins added 9, Kevan Viste 6, Walker Laumeyer and Caden Laumeyer 4 each and Bubba Pugh 2 points.

Nashua had 16 fouls, 10 in the second half. C. Laumeyer and Ethan Noser had three fouls each. Adkins, Viste, B. Pugh and Nielsen had two a piece. X. Pugh had one infraction.

The Porcupines carried their success over to Saturday night in Brockton with a second half comeback.

After a 10-10 tie after one, Nashua fell behind 23-15 at the half. Brockton held the Porcupines to 7 in the third while putting up 8 points.

But the fourth quarter belonged to Nashua. The Porcupines set the net on fire with 29 points, going 13-for-16 on bonus shots.

X. Pugh led all scorers with 23 points, hitting two from downtown and nailing all eight of his free throws. C. Laumeyer added 12 points while Nielsen and W. Laumeyer scored 5 a piece. Viste scored four from the charity stripe and Adkins added two free throws.

Nashua was called for 16 fouls, split evenly between the halves. Viste fouled out while X. Pugh was called for four infractions. Adkins, C. Laumeyer and Noser had two each and Nielsen one foul.
