Hallock Wins at Bismarck Rotary

Scotties Finish in 10th Place

January 12, 2022

“He had a great tournament. He pinned everybody. That’s pretty impressive for that tournament.”

Coach Jory Casterline was pleased with Kyler Hallock’s big win at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament in North Dakota this past weekend. The 195 lb. wrestler became the first Scottie to win a championship at the prestigious event in the four years of Glasgow attendance.

Hallock pinned Ben Nagel of Bismarck High in 4:37 to win his weight class. He defeated Jack Melvin of Dickinson, N.D., in 54 seconds in the semi-finals to earn his trip to the final round.

Damien Nesbitt also “had a good weekend” according to his coach. The senior pinned Ole Taylor of Bismarck Century, N.D., in 4:08 to finish in third place in the 170 lbs. class.

Devon Nesbitt finished in fifth place after winning a major decision 14-1 over Jax Kettwig of Watertown, S.D., in the 160 lbs. class.

Shaylynn Pedersen earned a fifth place finish on the girls side in the 125 lbs. class. She single-handedly earned a team 19th place finish after going 4-2 at the tournament.

Casterline limited his varsity entries at the tournament, seeking individual results rather than a high team placing. In the JV tournament, he was impressed with Ted See’s first place and Ted Tryan’s second-place finishes.

The big N.D. Tournament came the day after Glasgow took a dual off the Class A Glendive Red Devils by a score of 42-18 with six wins and two forfeit wins.

Casterline noted Mason Donaldson’s win over Espyn Hostetle was a “big win” and shows the Scottie junior is “capable of winning big matches” which the coach is looking for as the team enters the home stretch before post-season.

Overall, Casterline is still looking for his team to “clean up outside the wrestling room” with a focus on healthy eating habits, nutrition and sleep patterns. “We gotta do so many little things right,” he said.

This week the Scotties have two more big competitions: Thursday they travel to Sidney to take on the four-time Class A state champions and Friday and Saturday they attend the 64th Annual Cowboy Invitational in Miles City.

“We look for tough competition,” Casterline said about Sidney. “We gotta battle there.” Glasgow’s coach is looking for his team to close the gap created from the teams’ prior meeting, inching closer to victory. For those grapplers who won in the previous face-off, Coach Casterline looks for more decisive victories.

“I don’t know what [the Cowboy Classic] is going to be like. It’s down this year, for a variety of reasons,” Casterline said. Despite the lower numbers, the Scotties will see some tough competitors. Glasgow’s coach expects a number of head-to-head matches against the Huntley Project Red Devils, the Scotties top competition in Class B.

Miles City will also host a number of teams Glasgow will face in the Eastern Super Divisional Tournament, giving them a glimpse of the postseason.

“It’s not the Rotary, but we don’t need it right now,” Casterline concluded.

The Sidney Dual is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 13. The 64th Annual Cowboy Invitational will run Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14 and 15, in Miles City.
