Navajo Code Talkers

Adventures in St. Marie

The other day, we were reminiscing about our days in Hawaii and going to Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 of each year.

In 1991 we were honored to meet several of the famous Code Talkers.

Originally, in 1942, the U.S. Marine Corp. recruited 29 Navajo men to develop an unbreakable code that would be used across the Pacific during the war and were known as the Navajo Code Talkers.

By the end of the war, there were more than 400 Code Talkers that would openly transmit messages by telephone and radio in their native Navajo language, a code that was never broken by the Japanese.

Today, there is only three or four of these brave men alive and they are all in their 90’s.

In 2013, one of these Code Talkers passed away at the age 86 and was the last Lakota Code Talker.

His name was Clarence Wolf Guts and his son stated that when the World Trade Center towers came down, Clarence asked his son to contact the Department of Defense “to see if the country needed his code talking abilities to find Osama Bin Laden!”

Mr. Wolf Guts was a very patriotic warrior as was all the Code Talkers.

The sad part is, that soon there will be none to tell their stories as so many of the men and women who fought in WWII. They are all hero’s that kept our country free and we must never forget them.

Information was gleaned from several sources including “The Republic.”

On another note that really takes the cake, in our opinion!

There is a new tax law that the IRS is reminding thieves to report stolen property as income or return property to it’s rightful owners!

Yes siree, ya can’t make this one up!

If you steal property you must report it’s fair market value in your income in the year you steal it! Unless, that is, if you return it to the rightful owner in that year.

Also, if you take in cash from drug deals or other illegal activities such as smash and grabs over the past year, you have to report those financial gains on the 2021 taxes. And it must be included in your income on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8z, or on Schedule C (Form 1040) if from your self-employment activity,” the IRS noted.

“Reporting bribes and kickbacks is also required, according to USA Today, bribes can simply be included as part of an income.

What a country we live in today!

Saint Marie Fire Chief Aho would like to remind everyone that training this month is January 7th and the 21st at 6:30 pm at the fire station. And there is also a call out for more volunteers for our fire department.

A “Thank You” is in order to Nemont’s Dan and Carl who came out to fix our phone line during the deep freeze last week!

Last but NOT least! To our wonderful son-in-law Greg Pederson, a special “Happy Birthday!”
