McGee Steps in as Head Coach

The Glasgow Speech and Drama team is hitting the 2021-22 season with a new head coach. Kristina McGee stepped into the slot after two years as an assistant coach under previous head coach Jodie Griffin. The third-year Glasgow teacher also brings her experience as a competitor to bear.

The 2015 Helena Capital High graduate competed in impromptu and extemporaneous speaking, legislative debate (a AA exclusive category) and humorous duo. "I did a little bit of everything," McGee laughed.

The Speech and Drama season runs from November through the end of February and requires travel nearly every weekend. "The students commit to a lot," she said. McGee noted that while the season runs long, the coaching staff does not require many weekly practices. This, in part, is due to how much the students are willing to give above and beyond the expectations set for them.

If the coaches require just two practices a week, she explained, many of these competitors put in five to six practices on their own. This early in the season most students are working on memorization and figuring out which category of competition they want to commit to for the season.

The GHS English and Mythology teacher is enthused about her position and her team. "We have an amazing group of kids," she said. "They are extremely passionate and caring. It's great to see that level of commitment." She expects that her team members will find "where they are happiest" early in the season and work from then on out to perfect their performances.

McGee also expressed her gratitude to everyone who worked and volunteered their time at the Glasgow Speech and Drama Invitational. Without the help of students, faculty, and volunteers, the meet would not have been the success it was.
