Scottie Volleyball Team Wins Two

Sweep M-ettes and Wildcats

The Glasgow volleyball team recovered nicely this week after stumbling against Plentywood and in Chinook. The Scotties swept two conference opponents, Malta and Harlem, to improve their record to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in the conference.

Coach Somer Hoerster said she feels really good about her conference wins, adding, "Girls aren't all healthy so getting two district wins is big when the rotations change. I'm really happy with the wins."

On Thursday the Scotties took down the M-ettes in Malta 25-18, 25-19, 25-18. Glasgow led in three of five stat categories. The Scotties raked up 40 digs to the M-ettes' 29, 17 assists over Malta's 13 and 25 kills compared to the hosts' 14. Malta outpaced Glasgow in aces, 8 to 5, and blocks, 9-8.

Blaire Westby, libero, led the girls in red and white in digs with 12. Daley Aune, setter/opposite hitter, had two aces for Glasgow. Fellow setter/opposite hitter Tyann Graham had nine of Glasgow's 17 assists. Abrianna Nielsen, outside hitter, threw down with 11 kills to lead her team. Middle blocker/outside hitter Klaire Krumwiede connected for four of Glasgow's eight blocks.

Krumwiede told the Courier the highlight of her volleyball week was "definitely beating Malta on their homecoming game in their gym!" The Scottie senior is looking forward to seeing how much her team will grow together this season and the successes that will follow.

At home on Saturday, the Scotties routed the Wildcats, 25-11, 25-13, 25-16. The home team led in three stat categories while tying with their guests in two. Glasgow outpaced Harlem in kills, 17-16; blocks, 8-4 and aces, 19-7. Both teams had 31 digs and 14 assists.

The Scotties' win came with two of their starters out and junior players stepping into the roles usually played by Nielsen and Kate Parks. Coach Hoerster said, "I'm very proud of how Aspen [Stulc], Sammy [Tryan] and Tatym [Nyquist] stepped up and played very well being thrown in, and also how the other girls played in that situation also."

Veterans Krumwiede, Westby and Aune led their team to the win. Krumwiede led in kills, 5; blocks, 3 and aces, 6. Westby continued to lead in digs with 7 and Aune contributed 8 assists to Glasgow's stat sheet. Hoerster said her girls "served extremely well against Harlem" and that the team will continue to work on their aggressive serving.

Looking forward the team will be focusing on shot selection on the attack for when they are unable to swing fully on a set. Hoerster said, "I don't like tipping or pushing a ball over but it's inevitable that it needs to happen at times so we need to be able to do it when necessary." She will also be working on scramble plays when the girls have to chase the ball away from the net. "We still need to always try to get an aggressive play on that last ball that goes over."

Krumwiede said over the course of the two matches, "We learned that this year we really are gonna have to make every point count and really trust each other!"

The Scotties travel to Plentywood on Friday, Sept. 17, for a non-conference rematch against the Wildcats. JV action will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the varsity set to begin 20 minutes after the end of the last JV game. On Saturday, Sept. 18, all three Scottie squads will be in Poplar to take on the Indians. C-squad actions begins as 1 p.m. followed by the JV and varsity matches. All matches will be carried live on the NFHS Network.
