Scottie wrestler Cooper Larson competes during the Sidney Eagle Invitational on Dec. 7. Larson went into the C.M. Russell Holiday Classic unseeded and came out ranked fifth.

The Glasgow Scottie wrestlers traveled to Great Falls to take on 58 teams at the C.M. Russell Holiday Wrestling Classic. The two-day tournament took place on Dec. 20 and 21 and followed on the heels of the JV Fort Benton meet on Dec. 19. Overall the Scotties placed lucky number 13 against the deep field of teams ranging from Class AA down to C.

Scotties head coach Jory Casterline said the tournament was good, but expressed some concerns about his decision to move some wrestlers down to JV instead of competing in varsity. He also expressed frustration over continuing sickness amongst the athletes.

"Our kids competed, they battled hard," said Casterline before adding that, "I don't want to make excuses, but we've been really sick. We've been fighting colds and the flu." He expressed his hope that the down time during the holidays and some time off the mat will help get everyone healthy and back on the mats for the Bozeman meet this weekend (Jan. 4) at Bozeman High School.

As for the results of the meet, Casterline said the team was right where they needed to be. He told the Courier that there were a number of stand outs over the weekend including Cooper Larson who placed fifth overall in the 205 weight class.

"Cooper Larson continues to impress," explained Casterline. "He went into the tournament unseeded and came out fifth overall." Casterline also highlighted Mayson Phipps' defeat of the reigning Class B State Champ out of Colstrip, Trey Yates, and pointed out that reigning State champs Colten Fast and Dylan Nieskens had excellent showings at the tournament with Fast ranking fifth and Nieskens finishing fourth.

The coach also gave a shout out to Kaden Zimmerman who lost in his opening match but battled back with eight victories and a bye to clutch the fifth place finish overall.

"We are right where we need to be," said Casterline. "We just need to get healthy."
